International conference on environmental research and technology (Hafedh Yahya
This document summarizes a presentation given at the International Conference on Environmental Research and Technology (ICERT) in 2012. The presentation examined the impact of materials on the sustainability of historic mosques in Old Mosul City, Iraq. 30 existing historic mosques built between the 12th and 20th centuries were analyzed. The study found that local materials like mud bricks and limestone were widely used but were not durable, especially for ceilings, roofs, and outdoor floors exposed to weathering. Recent conservation efforts have used new materials like concrete that compromise the historic integrity of the structures. The presentation concluded it is important to conduct proper identification, evaluation and treatment of historic mosques to ensure the correct conservation approach is used and their historic characteristics
The role of building materials in architectural designHafedh Yahya
1) Building materials play a crucial role in architectural design by influencing both the functional and aesthetic aspects. Materials determine the structural properties and shapes that can be achieved.
2) The design process can be driven by either the form first or the material selection first. Successful designs integrate both the form and the material selection together through creativity.
3) Different materials have different structural strengths and weaknesses related to compression, tension, and bending. They also have varying visual and tactile properties related to transparency, color, reflectivity, temperature, and texture. The choice of appropriate materials is important for meeting technical requirements and conveying the desired aesthetic.
Environmental impacts of building materials for minarets of historical mosquesHafedh Yahya
. This paper focuses on building materials which contribute to environmental impacts as a result of energy consumption and depletion of natural resources. The topic of sustainability assessment rapidly gains importance. Consequently, there is need to assess environmental impact for building materials. Minarets are the study samples which are significant formal elements in mosque. The aim of the research is to assess the minarets’ materials of historical mosques in Mosul. The research conduct a survey to building materials used in all parts of the Minarets. In order to evaluate the sustainability of the major materials of the Minarets, the comparison is conducted for the environmental impact of life cycle inventory LCI for clay brick and limestone by the aid of GaBi 6.0 Education software. The results of the survey shows that 70% of constructed Minarets in old Mosul city were used clay brick other than limestone which was represent 30%. Clay brick contributes higher environmental impact than limestone due to manufacture process which consumes more energy for firing and drying. The research recommended to use local materials to reduce transport effects and reuse building materials in order to reduce the environmental impacts resulted from manufacture process.
The role of building materials in architectural designHafedh Yahya
. The argumentation of previous studies demonstrated the historical evolution of the materials in architecture and the position of the materials in the design process. The purpose is to recognize the role of materials in architectural design, and the materials are a core element of the design process. This paper is about the way materials can be used to create personality and character of the designed buildings. The research finds two overlapping roles for materials which are providing technical functionality and building personality. Thus building materials were one of the major factors for new innovation forms through the history of architecture and the key for future re-generations.
This document discusses the environmental impacts of building materials selection. It begins by noting that buildings are responsible for large portions of environmental impacts like energy usage and emissions. The document then examines specific impacts like air pollution, smog, ecological toxicity, and their health effects. Impacts on the environment like global climate change, acidification, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity are also reviewed. The energy usage of building materials during production, construction, use and demolition is assessed. The conclusion advocates selecting materials based on their full life cycle impacts to minimize environmental degradation and maximize resource savings, energy efficiency, and human health.
