Haji Ali Dargah Mumbai's History
Haji Ali Dargah Mumbai was constructed in 1413 to honour Sufi saint Sayyed Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari.
Saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari died on his way to Mecca, and his last wish was that his shroud (kafan) be
thrown into the sea and his body buried wherever the shroud was discovered. His body was discovered
floating in Worli Bay, and his followers decided to build a tomb in the sea as well as a mosque in the
same complex.
Between 1960 and 1964, the building was reconstructed in the twentieth century. The Haji Ali Dargah
Trust began managing the tomb in 1916, and a sanatorium with an entrance gate was added in 1950.
Following that, the Dargah Sharif underwent extensive remodelling and renovations, and the entire
complex now spans 5000 square metres.
