The document proposes the concept of an interactive website called Jobworld that would combine features of YouTube and Second Life. It would function as both a social network and virtual world, allowing job seekers to create profiles with CVs and companies to have profiles and post jobs. Users would interact through 3D avatars. The goal is to connect job seekers and companies in an online space where profiles and jobs can be discovered, and online interviews and interactions can take place through chat, video, and virtual meetings. Companies would pay fees to have recruiting tools and space on the site.
This document discusses how social media and new technologies can empower citizens and transform democracy. It notes that democracy is an ongoing project that needs modernizing through tools like Twitter, which can both help coordinate grassroots efforts but also be misused by terrorists. New technologies are lowering the costs of coordination and enabling people to accomplish more through volunteer efforts like Wikipedia. However, these technologies also raise serious issues around privacy, data protection, and how governments can productively partner with companies and citizens to take advantage of emerging opportunities while mitigating risks.
One,Many,All - 3 Aspects of Social ComputingRoy King
The document discusses three aspects of social computing:
1. The One - How individuals are becoming super empowered through social computing technologies but this is ahead of addressing moral and privacy issues.
2. The Many - How social computing enables new group dynamics and business models but also raises security issues for customers.
3. The All - How social computing impacts legal, regulatory and transparency issues at a societal level and questions how to ensure proper governance and infrastructure can support these new technologies.
The document summarizes the findings and recommendations of the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy. The Commission examined how to maximize the availability of relevant and credible information at the local level. It also looked at how to enhance individuals' capacity to access and use information. The Commission made recommendations in three areas: 1) maximizing information availability, 2) enhancing individuals' information capacity, and 3) promoting public engagement. The recommendations focused on supporting quality journalism, public media, civic data access, and digital/information literacy.
