Suggestions for rewriting sentences reported speech

These are some useful guidelines for rewriting a sentence in indirect speech. When you can
do this comfortably, you will also be able to do the reverse - rewriting a sentence in direct
speech. Copy the following checklist into your notebooks and use it as you do the exercises.

   1. Have I checked the new subject?

   2. Does the reporting verb need an object and if so, which one?

   3. Have I changed the tense of the verb correctly?

   4. Are there any time expressions, places, etc. that must be changed?

   5. Did I remember that in indirect questions, ordinary question structures are not used?

Example:

       “Have you ever been to China before?”

       The customs officer asked me whether I had been to Chine before.
