Instagram loophole sheds light on underage drinking trendschelseascherer
Researchers analyzed over 15,500 public Instagram accounts of underage users to study trends in underage drinking. They found that underage drinking occurs most on weekends and evenings around 6pm, peaking in December and January. Underage users accounted for over a quarter of followers for major alcohol brands like Smirnoff Vodka and Heineken. The research suggests social media provides insights into underage drinking that traditional surveys cannot by analyzing photos and language that reference alcohol consumption and brands.

This document summarizes a study on intentional exposure to pornography online among youth ages 10-15. The study found that 20% of youth reported intentional exposure to pornography in the last year, with 4.5% reporting exposure to violent pornography. Intentional exposure to violent pornography was strongly associated with self-reported sexually aggressive behavior, while the link between non-violent pornography exposure and sexually aggressive behavior was less clear. The findings suggest that intentional exposure to violent media content may increase risk of harmful behaviors for some youth.
Pew Research Study on Online Dating 021116Joe Adams
The document summarizes the key findings of a Pew Research Center survey on online dating:
- 15% of American adults have used online dating sites and/or mobile dating apps, up from 11% in 2013. Usage has increased most among young adults (ages 18-24) and older adults (ages 55-64).
- Young adults' usage of mobile dating apps has increased over fourfold since 2013, with 22% of 18-24 year olds now using them.
- 41% of Americans know someone who uses online dating and 29% know someone who has entered a long-term relationship from online dating.
The document summarizes research from surveys on youth exposure to online pornography and violence. It finds that around one-third of youth report unwanted exposure to pornography, with older teens and boys more likely to report it. Around 10-13% report intentional exposure, with older boys more likely. Exposure to violent websites is low at 2-4%. Youth reporting any exposure tend to face other challenges like substance use, bullying, and poor family relationships. The document concludes that simply knowing about certain websites is not enough for youth to visit them.

Mass inceration within the nation (poli-sci final paper) #2Marquise Toppin
This document discusses the link between the War on Drugs and mass incarceration of African Americans in the US. It provides background on the War on Drugs, which began in the 1970s under Nixon and escalated under Reagan. Harsh drug laws and mandatory minimum sentencing led to rapid growth in the prison population, disproportionately impacting African Americans. The document examines sources that show the prison population quadrupling since the 1970s, with drug offenses being a major contributing factor. It argues the War on Drugs was pursued in a way that targeted African American communities through policies that treated crack cocaine much more harshly than powder cocaine.
It's easy in a cause like ending drug prohibition to wonder if it will ever happen. Public support is not high. Politicians respond to the idea with ridicule, and viciously attack their political opponents (or their allies, for that matter) if they do otherwise.
This document proposes a policy to protect transgender students in the Francis Howell School District. It summarizes research finding high rates of suicide ideation and attempts among transgender youth due to lack of safety and acceptance in schools. Currently, the district has no protections for transgender students in its non-discrimination or bullying policies. The proposed policy would outline protections for privacy, inclusion of transgender students in gender-segregated activities and facilities, dress codes, and explicit inclusion of gender identity and expression in anti-discrimination policies. Adopting this policy is necessary to improve safety and protect transgender students.
How Americans View Alcohol and Marijuana - It's ComplicatedEvergreen Buzz
The document discusses the results of a survey on Americans' perceptions of alcohol and cannabis. While most respondents supported legalizing cannabis, there remains more social stigma around cannabis use compared to alcohol use. The survey found that people generally see alcohol as more dangerous and addictive than cannabis due to health risks like cancer and alcohol-related deaths and violence. However, respondents said they would lose more respect for people in positions like elected officials if they used cannabis versus alcohol.
The document discusses research that challenges the idea that marijuana is a "gateway drug" that leads to abuse of other substances. A 12-year University of Pittsburgh study found that individuals who used marijuana before alcohol or tobacco were no more likely to develop substance use disorders. Additionally, numerous other studies have failed to find a causal link between marijuana use and later abuse of harder drugs. Factors like personal tastes for altering consciousness and access to dealers of different substances through marijuana networks better explain correlations between marijuana and other drug use. Recent research suggests recreationally used cannabis does not act as a gateway to harder drugs.
The document argues that marijuana prohibition is the greatest scientific fraud of the last century for three main reasons:
1) Major scientific studies dating back to 1893 have found limited medical reasons for prohibiting marijuana, yet it remains illegal.
2) This prohibition has led to over 500,000 marijuana-related arrests in the US alone in 2019 and done immeasurable harm, while also preventing many from accessing marijuana's medical benefits.
3) Much of the research promoting prohibition has been funded by groups like the NIDA that have a stake in continued prohibition, skewing results. However, as funding for alternative research increases, views are starting to change.

- Over 94 million people in the US have used marijuana at least once.

The document analyzes and rebuts the top 10 arguments made by the DEA against drug legalization. It finds the DEA's claims to be misleading and contradicted by facts. For example, it argues prohibition has failed to curb drug use and fueled criminal networks, while legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco are more harmful than illegal drugs like marijuana. The document concludes the DEA lacks credibility in arguing about drug laws given its mandate is enforcement, not policymaking.

A recent survey by the General Social Survey (GSS), a primary authority in public opinion research, found that for the first time a majority (52%) of respondents supported legalizing marijuana. This represents an increase from 43% support in 2012 and only 16% in 1990. The GSS results align with other national polls that have also observed rising support for cannabis legalization across the United States in recent years.

How Many Americans Smoke Weed? The Results
are In!
The nationwide acceptance and use of cannabis in the United States are at an all-time high. This
claim has been corroborated by the recently published results of the Gallup Survey.
Over the last twenty years, the cannabis culture in the country has changed drastically. It has gone
from being a highly stigmatized plant and being banned in many states to a medically approved
drug that has been decriminalized in several states. Marijuana has a large number of fans across
the country, and the figure can only keep rising at this point.
Gallup Survey
The Gallup group decided to carry out this survey to get a picture of how much the country's
culture has changed since cannabis became a widely-used product. Very few of the available
statistics before this survey give recent numbers in the current cannabis use trend in the country.
The Gallup poll which was concluded recently shows that at least half of the United States
population have tried cannabis. The poll also compared this figure to cigarette usage statistics. At
least 15 percent of Americans smoke cigarettes and a high percentage of these users want to quit.
12 percent also said that they were regular users of cannabis.

This means that the rate of cannabis usage is almost, if not the same, as cigarette usage. An equal
number of people who smoke cannabis also smoke cigarettes regularly.
Something Surprising
Who would have thought that the baby boomers and even the Generation Xers would be a part of
the folks who now smoke cigarettes? Looking at the history of cannabis in the U.S, these folks are
old enough to remember the point cannabis became unacceptable and cigarettes became the
norm.
Back then, even TV shows and movies portrayed weeds as the bigger evil out of the two.
More statistics
About 50 percent of Americans above the age of 21 say they have tried cannabis according to the
new survey. This means that the number has doubled what it was in 1977. To shed more light on
this, cannabis usage statistics in America shows that 20 percent of American adults tried weed in
1977, in 1985 the number stood at 30 percent, and it was around 40 percent in 2015.
A new survey also shows categorically that cannabis users have been increasing since the late
1900s. However, it also clarifies that while new users have been trying the drug, the number of
regular cannabis smokers has remained the same all through the years. Since the 1970s, 11-13
percent of American adults have admitted to being regular smokers of marijuana. The lowest
figure was observed in 2013 when less than 8% of American adults said they regularly smoke
cannabis.

These figures are on the same page as the recent Gallup polls. The published results of the poll
show that about 68 percent of American Adults support the decriminalization and legalization of
cannabis in their states. An independent survey carried out early this year disclosed that 70
percent of Americans were not morally averse to using cannabis.
The Younger American Generation are More Inclined To Smoke Weed
The polls show that cannabis use in the older generation, the traditionalist group especially, is low.
Gallup classified people born before 1945 as traditionalists. This group is averse to cannabis use.
Only 19 percent of the total traditionalists say they have tried smoking pot a few times in their
seventy-plus years of living.
On the other hand, the other three generations after this group have tried cannabis several times,
and make up a huge percentage of the total regular users of cannabis.
At least 50% of the baby boomers have tried cannabis at a point, 49% of Generation Xers and more
than half of the Millennial population have tried cannabis.
According to Gallups report, there has been no noticeable increase in the percentage of Baby
boomers and Generation Xers who have tried marijuana since the 1980s and 1990s. However,
these figures have been used to replace the number lost to the death of older members of the
traditionalist generation.
Generation Z was not included in the survey, because they are still quite young with the oldest
members in the group being 24.
Regular users of cannabis
As expected the group that topped the regular smokers of cannabis were the youngest, the
millennials. The percentage of traditionalists that use cannabis regularly peaked at 1 percent, the
baby boomers came next at 9 percent. Generation Xers are the second-highest consumers of weed
at 11 percent, while above 20 percent of Millenials smoke cannabis regularly.
The poll also differentiated cannabis users based on their genders, religion, and educational level.
Based on gender
More men smoke weed across the United States. Women are just starting to adopt cannabis. For
now, 16 percent of American adults smoke marijuana compared to 9 percent of women that do
the same.
Based on religious practices
Just 3 percent of Americans who go to their religious place of worship weekly smoke cannabis,
while 6 percent of monthly attendees say they smoke cannabis.

Over 19 percent of Americans who rarely or never go for religious services say they smoke
cannabis regularly.
Based on Political affiliations
Liberals smoke more cannabis.
Only 6 percent of conservatives admitted to being regular users of marijuana, on the other hand,
about 22 percent of liberals admitted the same. This does not come as a surprise because liberals
have always been more supportive of cannabis reforms.
Based on Educational level
According to the survey, the lesser the educational attainment, the more the rate of marijuana
usage. 14 percent of American adults with bachelor's degrees, diplomas or less say they smoke
cannabis; that number remained at 5 percent for individuals with a postgraduate degree.
Bottom Line
Smoking is most common among the younger generations, and it is expected that generation Z will
increase the total tally when a new study is carried out.
The current statistics is the highest ever obtained to date.
The Gallup poll used to collate this data was conducted between July 6 and 21 of this year.
