An elderly couple, Arthur and Wanda, are experiencing relationship troubles due to Arthur's mental instability as a result of his experiences in World War II. One night, in a fit of rage, Arthur strikes Wanda across the face after accusing her of having an affair. Wanda agrees to stay only if Arthur seeks help. Their relationship continues to deteriorate and one night Arthur snaps and brutally beats Wanda to death. After coming out of his unstable state, Arthur discovers papers that reveal Wanda had been gathering research to help him, adding to his guilt over killing his only chance at freedom by murdering his wife.
