Various Case Study on Approach & Entrance
“Building approaches are like the beginning of a good novel”
-Francis DK Ching
Approach starts with a pathway to a building. The pathway is the first
phase of how we take in the building and prepare for how to use the
building's spaces.
There are 3 types of approach in architecture:
• Frontal
• Oblique
• Spiral
APPROACH
Frontal
A frontal approach leads directly to the entrance of a building
along a straight, axial path.
Lake Building
Flato Architects
Spiral
A spiral path prolongs the sequence of the
approach and
emphasizes the three-dimensional form of a
building as we move
around its perimeter.
Falling Water,Frank Lloyd Wright
Oblique
The path can be redirected
one or more times to delay and prolong the
sequence of the
approach.
There are 3 types of approach in architecture:
 Flush entrance
 Projected entrance
 Recessed entrance
A building's entrance is the threshold between the exterior and interior, it
contributes to the overall identity of the development and plays an important
role in the impression and experience formed by visitors.
ENTRANCE
Flush entrance:
A flush entrance maintains the continuity of the surface of a wall
and can be,
if desired, deliberately obscured.
Philip Johnson's 1949 Glass House, in New Canaan, Conn
Projected entrance:
A projected entrance forms a transitional space ,announces
its function to the approach, and provides
overhead shelter
School of Architecture and Planning,University of New Mexico lange house, van der rohe
A recessed entrance provides shelter and receives a
portion of exterior space into the realm of the
building.
