The first automatic teller machine (ATM) was introduced in Athens, Greece in 1963. Called a "De La Rue Machine" it allowed bank customers to withdraw cash without visiting a teller. The machine used magnetic-striped cards to verify account information and allow withdrawals of up to 50 drachmas.
