Tessa's grandmother, Holly Giles, spoke to her class about her 20 years serving on the Gettysburg Borough Council. Tessa learned specifics about how the local government operates, including how the police are funded, common crimes, taxes, and the powers of council members. It was meaningful for Tessa to learn new things about her hometown and grandmother. She appreciated gaining a better understanding of the work that goes into local events. While pleased overall, Tessa notes she could have planned better by including other speakers or providing background information.

Final report Gjestebud Alfred B C Holmen- AHO 2015Birger Sevaldson
This project is about ”Gjestebud”, and in more general terms
about how local democracy can be facilitated. Gjestebud is
a method for involving citizens in to municipal processes.
The reason it exists is party due to the fact that involving
citizens in processes is mandatory by law, but also partly
due to Svelvik Kommune innovating, and finding a method
that fit their process well. The basic concept of gjestebud is
that the municipality finds an area where they would like
to involve its citizens, send out a short brief for the topic or
issue to people it thinks have important feedback to give, and
get them to invite their friends to discuss the issue. It can be
summarized like this:
”Gjestebud is about citizens
inviting friends to their home
and discussing issues from the
municipality.”
The task of this project is to look in to this process, and look
at how it is screwed together with the aim of designing some
intervention or concept connected to this process. Since this
is a design project, design methods and design thinking will
be used as the main tools for investigating the system.

2. My experience
My experience with this project was very fulfilling
and informative. I invited my grandmother to come in
to class and speak. She spoke about her 20 years
serving on the Gettysburg Borough Council, how our
local government operates, and her personal
motivation and experiences. Not only did I learn more
about how my local government works and how I can
play a part in that, I also learned things I didn’t know
about my grandma. I also felt good about my project
because it gave my grandmother a chance to spread
her vast knowledge to an interested and informed
group of students.
3. Current Gettysburg Borough
My grandmother, former Council (my grandmother is not
Councilwoman, Holly Giles included because she choose not
to run)
4. Left: First settler of Gettysburg, John Troxell
Right: Current Mayor Troxell, relative of the first
founder of Gettysburg
5. What did I learn?
I learned specifics about the borough
government. Specifics include:
– how the police forceis funded by Borough taxes
– how college kids cause the most crimes
– how much Borough occupants pay in taxes
– how much power the Borough Council members
have
– how the Borough Council members’ political
affiliation doesn’t come into play
6. What did you do to make this
meaningful to you?
It was meaningful to learn new things about the
town I’ve always lived in. It gave me a new appreciation
for all of the little things that occur - from parades, to
police, to fireworks. It also gave me a better
understanding of all the work, deliberation, and
meetings that go into making these events happen.
This project was especially meaningful to me
because it involved my grandmother. I got to learn new
things about her and that experience is invaluable.
7. What could you have done better?
I am pleased with how my project turned
out. I could have done certain things better.
Maybe if I had planned a bit more in
advance, other members could of possibly
come in and spoken in addition to my
grandmother. It could of also been possible to
do a PowerPoint prior to my grandmother’s
speaking to give my classmates more
background information.
