2. History
1996: founded by Molly Barker with 13 girls in
NC
2000: Middle School version, Girls on Track
started
2009: reached 62,665 girls
2012: 200 Councils in 47 states and Canada
3. Purpose
To help elementary and middle school girls
○ go through positive development
○ make better decisions in the future
○ avoid at risk situations
○ live active and healthy lives
4. What they do
● 12 week long program, twice weekly
● Lessons are mixtures of fun activities,
running, and important lesson topics
including
○ understanding themselves
○ setting goals
○ leadership and teamwork
○ community service and giving
○ healthy living
● program ends with a 5k race
5. Final Race
● All of the girls race with a running buddy
and get the bib number "1"
● The starting line is very colorful with fun
tween music playing
● Many races have healthy snacks, lots of
volunteer cheerers, and sometimes a hair
decorating station
● Everyone cheers until the final girl
crosses the finish line!
