Golden Statues 2014 - TLC for Youth and Families Affected by Cancer

CANSA TLC (Tough Living with Cancer) is a programme for children and teens diagnosed with cancer or affected by cancer (a family member has cancer). Support is provided to the family as a whole in both scenarios. No child or family should have to face cancer on their own. Our TLC programme is dedicated to providing tangible love, care and support to children and families affected by cancer. CANSA’s TLC focuses on awareness of childhood cancers and early detection. It is estimated that at least half of all children with cancer in South Africa are never diagnosed. This is due to a lack of knowledge regarding the disease amongst children and as a result many children are diagnosed too late, when the cancer is already in an advanced stage, thus diminishing the possibility of successful treatment. The incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing with women having a one in 29 lifetime risk of being diagnosed and the most common cancer in women of all races and ethnicities. With such alarming rates, it places so many women at risk and so we urge all women to go for regular screening and also find ways to lower your cancer risk.
The overall goal of CANSA’s campaign is to improve women’s health and well-being by encouraging women to ensure they have the knowledge to put in place their own risk reduction measures. Through its campaign, CANSA is providing access to information that enables people to make healthy lifestyle choices. CANSA also encourages screening and early detection.

Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian citizen to go to space. He was born in 1949 in Patiala, Punjab and graduated from universities in Hyderabad. In 1970, he joined the Indian Air Force as a pilot officer. In 1984, Rakesh spent eight days in space aboard the Soviet space station Salyut 7, becoming the first Indian to go into space. By representing Punjab in space exploration, Rakesh helped make Indian and Punjabi culture more famous globally and improved how they were viewed historically.

CANSA HPV and CERVICAL CANCER 2023
On 4 March 2022, International Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Day, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) supports the International Papillomavirus Society’s (IPVS) #OneLessWorry campaign, that aims to raise awareness of the virus, and the tools to overcome it, such as screening and vaccination programmes. HPV can cause cancer and is responsible for almost half a million deaths globally each year.

CANSA says Choose Smoke-free Lives - May 2022
CANSA aligns itself to the theme, ‘Tobacco – Threat to our Environment’ for World No Tobacco Day (31 May 2022). Together with the National Council Against Smoking (NCAS), Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa and the South African Medical Research Council, it continues campaigning for the new Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill to be passed by Parliament, to make it easier for South Africans to choose smoke-free lives and put an end to the threat tobacco-use poses to the environment.

On 4 March 2022, International Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Day, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) supports the International Papillomavirus Society’s (IPVS) #OneLessWorry campaign, that aims to raise awareness of the virus, and the tools to overcome it, such as screening and vaccination programmes. HPV can cause cancer and is responsible for almost half a million deaths globally each year.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
