The tradition of foot binding in China involved binding young girls' feet tightly starting at age 6 to prevent normal growth, breaking and deforming them to remain only 4-6 inches long. This was initially practiced by wealthy families to suggest beauty and marriageability, becoming popular across social classes except peasants. While banned in the early 1900s, some continued in secret. Survivors today suffer disability and pain from their small, dysfunctional feet.
