Goiás Velho was the capital of the state of Goiás until 1933 and preserves colonial architecture from that period. It was recognized as a historical patrimony by UNESCO in 2001 for its restoration work and unique architecture. The city is known as the home of poetess Cora Coralina, whose small house along the river is now a museum about her life and work. It has a population of around 24,000 people and its economy is based on tourism and agriculture, especially during Holy Week celebrations that feature a flaming procession.
