Solutions for Dutch
SDGs and Dutch Life
The Netherlands' weather is very rainy and windy. We thought
young people would be depressed because of the bad weather.
Contrary to our expectation, they were really positive and active.
HELLO THERE!
Introduction
CURIOUS ABOUT THEM
We are Dohee Son, Gyeongmin Kim, Jiwon Lee, and we came to
The Netherlands to take part in exchange student program. We are
really curious about Dutch Life.. So we shared our thoughts with
Dutch people and We would like to tell you..
In addition, according to the UN's 'World Happiness Report 2022',
the Netherlands ranked the 5th-happiest country in the world. We are very
curious about their happy daily lives, completely unaffected by the
gloomy weather.
*These data are then crossed with national GDP, social support, personal
freedom, and levels of corruption to give each nation a happiness score.
We thought it could provide solutions related to SDGs
to other countries through the happy Dutch life.
Research
Background?
SDGs
WHAT IS SDGS?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the largest joint goals of
the United Nations and the international community, which will be
implemented from 2016 to 2030. It is the largest joint goal of the
international community to be implemented to solve 17 state goals and
169 detailed goals by 2030 due to human universal problems, global
environmental problems, and economic and social problems.
Sustainable
DevelopmentGoals
We will focus on Goal number 3 among the 17 parts!
Goal target
?
By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable
diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and
well-being
3RD GOAL OF SDGS
(GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING)
SDGs
HappyDutchLife
There seems to be a great correlation
between the research topic of HAPPY
DUTCH LIFE and SDGs' goal No. 3.
Everyone knows that happiness comes
from good health and well-being. To
promote mental health and well-being
by 2030, one of the goal targets of
goal 3, effective solutions that can be
benchmarked along with international
efforts are required.
Therefore, Dutch will be able to
provide the solution. The Netherlands is
one of the happy countries that
everyone knows, and we want to find
out how their lives are and how they
pursue and enjoy happiness.
3RD GOAL OF SDGS DUTCH LIFE
While living in the Netherlands, we found some reasons
why young people in the Netherlands are happy.
Now I'm going to introduce some of those elements.
1. RIDING A BIKE
Causes
ofhappy
Ductchlife
We thought riding a bike relieves stress and helps to have a positive mind
as a kind of exercise. We also thought that Dutch people who learned to
ride bikes from an early age could be independent. Because they can go
anywhere if they have a bike!
Do you think that bicycles can be the cause of happiness?
I think it does relieve stress to ride a bike as you cycle and
Can’t think about anything else. One of my own core memories was learning
how to ride a bike as my parents run after me and suddenly let it go. It’s a
good memory. However if you ask me, if is it the cause of happiness? I don’t
know. I think a bigger cause might be that we are always surrounded by
nature. There are a lot of parks, a lot of trees and fields. I think this is one of
the biggest contributions to happiness. Cycling through this however might
make you even happier. So I think cycling is a contributing factor to the
happiness of Dutch people.. unless it rains.
-Annique-
INTERVIEWS WITH DUTCH PEOPLE
ABOUT 'RIDING A BIKE'
There is a dutch word uitwaaien which
translates into going out into the wind to relieve
stress and think about things to live. To make
people relax again
.
-Sjeng-
Yes for sure! But for me, it is also my
sport. It really makes me happy. It
really gives freedom. You can reach
everything by bike!
-Melissa-
In Korea, it is much more important to do better than others in exams
than to evaluate individual skills. The usual report card we receive
after the semester includes our ranking for each subject. Therefore,
life in Korea is much more intense. There is always a comparison
between us and our classmates. On the other hand, the Netherlands
seems to be more focused on the development of each student.
Unlike Korea, where they have to receive high grades and rankings,
the Netherlands seems to have a mindset that puts more meaning on
the process than the result. For instance, they have more programs
and internships which is required.
2. METHOD OF EDUCATION
Causes
ofhappy
Ductchlife
Do you compete with other students at school?
Is the competitive spirit that you have to do better than other
students prevalent in your school?
Not at all. Schools don’t compete with each
other, and we don’t have a school ranking
either. So, no school is considered better
than another. However, if multiple high
schools are in one city for example; students
will say: we’re better than that school. But
you don’t really know what’s going on in that
school. We also don’t compete with grades.
You don’t know who got the best grades in
class and there is no ranking here either. So,
this competitiveness is nonexistent in Dutch
schools. We do have sport days where your
class goes against another class. This is the
only time where there is a ranking :)
-Annique-
No, I think there is no competing between
students. Not for me at least.
-Sjeng-
For me, personally no. In high school,
yes but in university not anymore.
If I pass it, I'm happy with it.
-Melissa-
INTERVIEWS WITH DUTCH PEOPLE
ABOUT 'METHOD OF EDUCATION'
When we first came to Netherlands, we were surprised that people
wore clothes based on their own style. In Korea, we usually have
typical fashion items that people like to wear. For instance,
nowadays low waist pants, warmer, and wide pants are very popular
in Korea due to the comeback of Y2K styling.
3. BE LESS SENSITIVE TO FASHION.
Causes
ofhappy
Ductchlife
However,
In here, not a lot of people are obsessed
with fashion and they also like to buy
clothes from reshare stores. Therefore,
we thought that the Netherlands don't
really have a fashion trend.
For guys, sweatpants were very much a big in the past few years,
just like fanny packs. For guys however we don’t really see a lot of
fashion trends. For girls we have this one skirt that every girl
basically had (if they went with the trends) also flared pants were a
big trend for a while and currently we’re moving towards bright
colored clothing. We also have this meme called “Anne-Fleur” which
is a Dutch name. If someone wore very typical Dutch trends, they
would get called this also. Also, the brand 'my jewelry' is a big hit.
-Annique-
I would say, jeans, just all kinds of
fashion... not a particular piece I can
think of now.
-Sjeng-
There are a lot of big stores like
HM, CA and Zara where a lot of
people buy. Also, high end brands like
Chanel and Burberry are worn a lot.
There are a lot of different trends
depending on the target audience than
people need clothes for hot summers
+30 degrees and cold winters -10
degrees.
-Melissa-
Is there a fashion trend in the Netherlands?
INTERVIEWS WITH DUTCH PEOPLE
ABOUT 'FASHION TREND'
Solutions
forDutch
For the above reasons, we think that young Dutch people can be happy.
Some of these reasons will provide a good direction
for other countries and could be a great solution.
So what other ways are there to make life happier in the Netherlands?
We have studied how young people in the Netherlands can be happier,
and we will propose two solutions.
First, what if there is a multicultural space where young people in the
Netherlands could understand diversity and enjoy it? While living in the
Netherlands, we felt that there was a lack of things that young people could
enjoy actively and dynamically. As students in the Netherlands, the only
places we could normally spend time outside and hang out were restaurants,
pubs, clubs, and izakaya. We need to be able to learn something creative,
communicate with people, show our talents, and enjoy sensibly. We also felt
that Dutch students lacked knowledge compared to their interest in various
races and cultures. In a society where personalization and isolation are
intensifying, cultural spaces will help them to recognize culture in life by
encouraging various social participation activities.
1. CULTURAL DIVERSITY
What if there is a modern art exhibition full of fresh ideas, world food
truck where you can enjoy various cultures, a busking place where
everyone can enjoy, a practice room where you can practice singing or
dancing, and a warm space where you can talk comfortably? We need a
multi-cultural space with various leisure facilities. We even felt that
Amsterdam, the coolest city in Europe, lacked cultural elements for young
people to enjoy. We went to Amsterdam for a field trip. Of course, there
are museums in Amsterdam that hold the proud works of artists and
museums that contain history. However, there is no community space
where young people can share and enjoy various cultures around the
world, speak aloud, and engage in social participation activities.
BERLIN - MAUER PARK FLEAMARKET
Benchmark
fromothercities
In the case of Berlin, Germany, which is very close to the Netherlands, a
very large flea market is held at ‘Mauer Park' every Sunday. In addition to
buying many antiques, you can also purchase albums from various
countries and taste foods from various countries, including Asia. The flea
market in Berlin's Mauer Park is loved by young locals as well as tourists.
We can find solutions through various urban cases in other countries.
In London, England, there is the trendiest cultural space, ‘Flat Iron
Square’. The renovated railroad space offers a variety of things to enjoy,
including restaurants, cafes, indie musicians' concert halls, and weekend
flea markets. Maltby Street has long lines of food trucks in alleys every
weekend. People can enjoy various world foods and cultures such as
Indian food and Vietnamese food.

Solutions
forDutch
Since we are exchange students, the first thing we were worried
about was racial discrimination. Luckily, we didn't have many
incidents regard to it.
But we still think there need to be some changes happening here.
Especially, Educating the young generation could be a way to make
society more equal. We've come out of three reasons that could
have affected racial discrimination which is inside society.
2. RACISM EDUCATION
WITH DUTCH HISTORY
Firstly, it is the long history of colonization done by the Dutch.
If you
look back at the long history of the Netherlands, You can find many
historical records about the Netherlands colonizing various countries.
For instance, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Surinam, and so on were the
countries that were sacrificed during the colonial period. They also
made various organizations to have full power in the colony. The
Dutch EastIndia Company called the Verenigde Oostindische
Compagnie or VOC in Dutch is also an example of it. Its main purpose
was trade, exploration, and colonization throughout the17th and 18th
centuries. It was created in 1602 and lasted until 1800.
LONG HISTORY OF DUTCH COLONIZATION
In 2017, according to research, the Netherlands is composed of
77.39% Germanic white people. The rest is 9.88% of European, 2.34%
of Turkish people, 2.29% of Morocco people, 2.13% of Indonesians,
2.05% of Surinam people, and 0.90% of Caribbean descent.
Secondly, it is hard to find ethnic diversity in the Netherlands, As you
can see white people are dominant in this society and they are the main
member of this country. The rest of the people who are mainly not white
could figure it difficult to adjust in this community. Also, political or
economic decisions could be made more beneficial to one side.
LOW ETHNIC DIVERSITY
Lastly, the long history of slavery remains in society. For instance,
Netherlands' traditional character Black Pete, also known as Zwarte Piet in
Dutch, is a symbol of racism. Some people say that the character comes
from an old custom but it is a remnant of inequality in the Dutch system. The
appearance of Black Pete is reminiscent of slaves and slavery back then
because it is traditionally portrayed by white people
as buffoons in full blackface complete with oversized lips and Afro wigs.
WHO IS BLACK PETE?
*Black pete is an elf that
helps Santa Claus to deliver
presents to children. His face
is black due to the dust
inside of the chimney.
What is the solution for it?
It is apparent that somehow racial discrimination
could be remained in a certain part of tradition or
even in the society itself. It is important to
educate the young generation with accurate
information. By learning the long history of
colonization, they could reject white supremacy
and see each people as they are. Courses like
global citizenship could be a good way to
acknowledge the different cultures that each
country has. Also, they could see each individual
as a global citizen regardless of their background.
RACISM EDUCATION
WITH DUTCH HISTORY
Conclusion
Compared to life in the Netherlands and
Korea, there were many different parts.
Looking at the comparison points, we can
see the reasons why Dutch people could be
happy. They could control their stress and
get a spirit of independence by riding a
bicycle. They could develop their
personality, social justice, and the common
good through a teaching method that did not
compare with others. Furthermore, they
maintained their style by not following the
trend blindly.
However, there were many parts that society
should still work on. Even though many
immigrants came here, they were only
partially accepted into the community.
Therefore, cultural activities and history
education that helps to experience various
cultures must be prepared.

I don’t know. I think a bigger cause might be that we are always surrounded by nature. There are a lot of parks, a lot of trees and fields. I think this is one of the biggest contributions to happiness. Cycling through this however might make you even happier. So I think cycling is a contributing factor to the happiness of Dutch people.. unless it rains. -Annique- INTERVIEWS WITH DUTCH PEOPLE ABOUT 'RIDING A BIKE' There is a dutch word uitwaaien which translates into going out into the wind to relieve stress and think about things to live. To make people relax again . -Sjeng- Yes for sure! But for me, it is also my sport. It really makes me happy. It really gives freedom. You can reach everything by bike! -Melissa-

The usual report card we receive after the semester includes our ranking for each subject. Therefore, life in Korea is much more intense. There is always a comparison between us and our classmates. On the other hand, the Netherlands seems to be more focused on the development of each student. Unlike Korea, where they have to receive high grades and rankings, the Netherlands seems to have a mindset that puts more meaning on the process than the result. For instance, they have more programs and internships which is required. 2. METHOD OF EDUCATION Causes ofhappy Ductchlife
  • 12. Do you compete with other students at school? Is the competitive spirit that you have to do better than other students prevalent in your school? Not at all. Schools don’t compete with each other, and we don’t have a school ranking either. So, no school is considered better than another. However, if multiple high schools are in one city for example; students will say: we’re better than that school. But you don’t really know what’s going on in that school. We also don’t compete with grades. You don’t know who got the best grades in class and there is no ranking here either. So, this competitiveness is nonexistent in Dutch schools. We do have sport days where your class goes against another class. This is the only time where there is a ranking :) -Annique- No, I think there is no competing between students. Not for me at least. -Sjeng- For me, personally no. In high school, yes but in university not anymore. If I pass it, I'm happy with it. -Melissa- INTERVIEWS WITH DUTCH PEOPLE ABOUT 'METHOD OF EDUCATION'
  • 13. When we first came to Netherlands, we were surprised that people wore clothes based on their own style. In Korea, we usually have typical fashion items that people like to wear. For instance, nowadays low waist pants, warmer, and wide pants are very popular in Korea due to the comeback of Y2K styling. 3. BE LESS SENSITIVE TO FASHION. Causes ofhappy Ductchlife However, In here, not a lot of people are obsessed with fashion and they also like to buy clothes from reshare stores. Therefore, we thought that the Netherlands don't really have a fashion trend.
  • 14. For guys, sweatpants were very much a big in the past few years, just like fanny packs. For guys however we don’t really see a lot of fashion trends. For girls we have this one skirt that every girl basically had (if they went with the trends) also flared pants were a big trend for a while and currently we’re moving towards bright colored clothing. We also have this meme called “Anne-Fleur” which is a Dutch name. If someone wore very typical Dutch trends, they would get called this also. Also, the brand 'my jewelry' is a big hit. -Annique- I would say, jeans, just all kinds of fashion... not a particular piece I can think of now. -Sjeng- There are a lot of big stores like HM, CA and Zara where a lot of people buy. Also, high end brands like Chanel and Burberry are worn a lot. There are a lot of different trends depending on the target audience than people need clothes for hot summers +30 degrees and cold winters -10 degrees. -Melissa- Is there a fashion trend in the Netherlands? • 15. Solutions forDutch For the above reasons, we think that young Dutch people can be happy. Some of these reasons will provide a good direction for other countries and could be a great solution. So what other ways are there to make life happier in the Netherlands? We have studied how young people in the Netherlands can be happier, and we will propose two solutions. First, what if there is a multicultural space where young people in the Netherlands could understand diversity and enjoy it? While living in the Netherlands, we felt that there was a lack of things that young people could enjoy actively and dynamically. As students in the Netherlands, the only places we could normally spend time outside and hang out were restaurants, pubs, clubs, and izakaya. We need to be able to learn something creative, communicate with people, show our talents, and enjoy sensibly. We also felt that Dutch students lacked knowledge compared to their interest in various races and cultures. In a society where personalization and isolation are intensifying, cultural spaces will help them to recognize culture in life by encouraging various social participation activities. 1. CULTURAL DIVERSITY
  • 16. What if there is a modern art exhibition full of fresh ideas, world food truck where you can enjoy various cultures, a busking place where everyone can enjoy, a practice room where you can practice singing or dancing, and a warm space where you can talk comfortably? We need a multi-cultural space with various leisure facilities. We even felt that Amsterdam, the coolest city in Europe, lacked cultural elements for young people to enjoy. We went to Amsterdam for a field trip. Of course, there are museums in Amsterdam that hold the proud works of artists and museums that contain history. However, there is no community space where young people can share and enjoy various cultures around the world, speak aloud, and engage in social participation activities.
  • 17. BERLIN - MAUER PARK FLEAMARKET Benchmark fromothercities In the case of Berlin, Germany, which is very close to the Netherlands, a very large flea market is held at ‘Mauer Park' every Sunday. In addition to buying many antiques, you can also purchase albums from various countries and taste foods from various countries, including Asia. The flea market in Berlin's Mauer Park is loved by young locals as well as tourists. We can find solutions through various urban cases in other countries.
  • 18. In London, England, there is the trendiest cultural space, ‘Flat Iron Square’. The renovated railroad space offers a variety of things to enjoy, including restaurants, cafes, indie musicians' concert halls, and weekend flea markets. Maltby Street has long lines of food trucks in alleys every weekend. People can enjoy various world foods and cultures such as Indian food and Vietnamese food. Benchmark fromothercities LONDON - FLAT IRON SQUARE
  • 19. Solutions forDutch Since we are exchange students, the first thing we were worried about was racial discrimination. Luckily, we didn't have many incidents regard to it. But we still think there need to be some changes happening here. Especially, Educating the young generation could be a way to make society more equal. We've come out of three reasons that could have affected racial discrimination which is inside society. 2. RACISM EDUCATION WITH DUTCH HISTORY
  • 20. Firstly, it is the long history of colonization done by the Dutch. If you look back at the long history of the Netherlands, You can find many historical records about the Netherlands colonizing various countries. For instance, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Surinam, and so on were the countries that were sacrificed during the colonial period. They also made various organizations to have full power in the colony. The Dutch EastIndia Company called the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC in Dutch is also an example of it. Its main purpose was trade, exploration, and colonization throughout the17th and 18th centuries. It was created in 1602 and lasted until 1800. LONG HISTORY OF DUTCH COLONIZATION
  • 21. In 2017, according to research, the Netherlands is composed of 77.39% Germanic white people. The rest is 9.88% of European, 2.34% of Turkish people, 2.29% of Morocco people, 2.13% of Indonesians, 2.05% of Surinam people, and 0.90% of Caribbean descent. Secondly, it is hard to find ethnic diversity in the Netherlands, As you can see white people are dominant in this society and they are the main member of this country. The rest of the people who are mainly not white could figure it difficult to adjust in this community. Also, political or economic decisions could be made more beneficial to one side. LOW ETHNIC DIVERSITY Lastly, the long history of slavery remains in society. For instance, Netherlands' traditional character Black Pete, also known as Zwarte Piet in Dutch, is a symbol of racism. Some people say that the character comes from an old custom but it is a remnant of inequality in the Dutch system. The appearance of Black Pete is reminiscent of slaves and slavery back then because it is traditionally portrayed by white people as buffoons in full blackface complete with oversized lips and Afro wigs. WHO IS BLACK PETE? *Black pete is an elf that helps Santa Claus to deliver presents to children. His face is black due to the dust inside of the chimney.
  • 22. What is the solution for it? It is apparent that somehow racial discrimination could be remained in a certain part of tradition or even in the society itself. It is important to educate the young generation with accurate information. By learning the long history of colonization, they could reject white supremacy and see each people as they are. Courses like global citizenship could be a good way to acknowledge the different cultures that each country has. Also, they could see each individual as a global citizen regardless of their background. RACISM EDUCATION WITH DUTCH HISTORY
  • 23. Conclusion Compared to life in the Netherlands and Korea, there were many different parts. Looking at the comparison points, we can see the reasons why Dutch people could be happy. They could control their stress and get a spirit of independence by riding a bicycle. They could develop their personality, social justice, and the common good through a teaching method that did not compare with others. Furthermore, they maintained their style by not following the trend blindly. However, there were many parts that society should still work on. Even though many immigrants came here, they were only partially accepted into the community. Therefore, cultural activities and history education that helps to experience various cultures must be prepared. WE'RE HAPPY TO SHARE...
