Look what happens when six homeowners put their beautifully
landscaped backyards in the hands of six designers. Deborah Lalande,
owner of Bleu Venue Events, and the Mississauga Backyard Glam
Tour’s promoter, assigned each designer a unique theme. The results?
They knocked their themes out of the ballpark. Six glam slams. Continued on page 20

At the edge of the blue-green waters of Lake
Ontario, the Toronto skyline is modern
frieze against a background of cloudless sky.
Hardscape is minimalist and architectural.
Tina’s design flows across it as softly and
effortlessly as the water lapping against
the shoreline.
“I wanted an upscale resort feel,” says
Tina. Tall planters from Hearth Manor spill
with flowers and foliage, marking the water’s
edge. Daybeds, sofas, loungers and sectionals
are arranged for conversation. A mix of teak,
stainless steel and resin are low-maintenance
and weather, water and UV resistant. Beach
towels and throws in creams, jewelled blue,
turquoise and sea-foam green, reiterate
the water theme.
Tina’sDesignMaxim:“In every design,
I love to glam it up a bit with a unique
touch of sparkle.”
This design beautifully interprets nostalgia.
The mood is a 1920s picnic; a nod to Mazo de la
Roche, author of the Jalna novel saga, reputed to
have written her books here. In keeping with
the period, soft, muted colours, texture and
natural elements are used with moss and ferns,
wood, wicker, iron and wool throws.
An elegant table is laid with a moss runner
and topped with leafy placemats. Napkins are
ringed with wicker. Handmade birch place-
cards display the names of the home’s original
pioneer owners. Strings of LED fairy lights
hang from trees, setting a magical mood.
Vignettes throughout the space are set
with period accessories, like the iconic
Hudson’s Bay striped wool blankets, metal
picnic baskets and black-iron lanterns. It’s an
elegant design that incorporates natural living
things – leaves, trees, branches, moss, wood
and bark – taking us back to a simpler era.
Natasha’sDesignMaxim:“I consider
the way you live every day and then
reflect your personal style throughout
your home!”
Jasmina’sDesignMaxim:“Making your
life a little easier by creating beautiful
spaces for your lifestyle.”
Kalli’sDesignMaxim:“Designing rooms
that are perfectly you.”

Neighbouring the pond,
a British-style, red-brick,
half wall is a backdrop to
the dining space, where a
table is set with simplicity
and repetition: “A form of
visual tension and the key to
achieving that casually formal,
classic feel,” Evelyn reveals.
Her colour choices reflect the
outdoors: azure, robin’s-egg
blue, teal and moss green.
Evelyn’sDesignMaxim:
“I embrace the comfort of
traditional design, but with
a contemporary edge.” Her
designs are about setting
the stage and creating
magical backdrops where
the everyday and every
special day, unfold.
Soft grey and taupe
fabrics echo the flagstone.
Blues, corals, yellows and
earthy greens set a tranquil
mood. A folkloric pattern in
dining-chair cushions adds
a touch of whimsy. Patterns
play with the water theme:
shell pillows are tossed on
loungers “positioned for
lovers on a quiet afternoon,”
laughs Barbara, bringing
to mind Daisy and Jay in
TheGreatGatsby.
Barbara’sDesignMaxim:
“Live better, feel better…
by design.” Barbara’s role
is to help clients create
surroundings that nurture
and sustain feelings of
wellbeing through the
visual elements of colour,
texture, scale, emphasis and
proportion.
“Thousands have lived without love, not
one without water,” wrote the poet, W. H.
Auden. “Water sustains us physically, and
psychologically too,” says Barbara. “My design
is a retreat from the hectic.”
All architectural lines lead to the lake, from
the manicured lawn to the vanishing edge of
an infinity pool. Barbara’s design softens those
lines, while keeping the focus on the lake. The
outdoor kitchen is dressed with abstract art
from Crescent Hill Gallery, their colours
reiterating the water theme.
Tall trees outline a manicured lawn filled with
colourful annuals and perennials. Trickles
from the fountain ripple across a lily pond.
Now, stage the spaces for what they were
meant for: people. “We’re simply enhancing
the beautiful environment,” says Evelyn,
“Our design goal was casual glamour in a
rambling way, as in a stately British garden.”
A distressed grey and brown sectional from
Casualife Outdoor Living encourages legs
curled up for an intimate tête-à-tête, or bare
feet crossed lazily on the trellis-patterned
mossy-green outdoor rug.

Tina used bold reds and golds to match the
brilliant annuals and achieve Muskoka-like
tranquility and relaxation. Tranquility is a
mood, not a colour, so the bold colours help
pull one away from a busy life, and add a
healthy dose of fun.
Fabrics are weather, water and UV
resistant. Inspiration is derived from the tiny
gazebo in the corner of the garden, around
which Tina hung cotton curtains. Fanned by
the breeze, the curtains reveal an intimate
setting for a quiet chat. From there, it’s fun in
the sun, with the pool as the centrepiece. An
outdoor gas fireplace from Hearth Manor
separates the dining space from a cosy
gathering spot. Tina brings in her trademark
touch of bling with wide-mouthed vases filled
with silvery wood shavings.
Tina’sDesignMaxim:“Make it
restful, but fun. Make it about family.
Seize the day.”

Let the games begin! “It’s all about fun
and games, with a not-so-subtle dose of
nostalgia,” laughs Barbara, talking about her
interpretation of the theme.
The predominant colour choices of
burgundy, red, cream and brown, hark back
to an earlier era. It’s a yard with room for
rollicking games like croquet, horseshoes and
bocce. Under leafy trees, old-fashioned picnic
blankets and metal baskets are the perfect
backdrop for quiet chatter. When the games
are over, the pool beckons.
