GIFT
GIFT
• /gift/
• Noun
• A thing given willingly to someone without payment/compensation.
• Also means special ability
• As human beings, we are social creatures who enjoy each other’s company and
expressing our feelings through the giving of gifts. Whether it is an expression of true
love, appreciation of a job well done or just to show our gratitude for having someone
as a friend, the giving of gifts is engrained into our DNA.
• Psychologists, anthropologists, economists and marketers have found that giving gifts
is a surprisingly complex and important part of human interaction, helping to define
relationships and strengthen bonds with family and friends.
• People who refuse to accept or exchange gifts during the holidays, these experts say,
may be missing out on an important connection with family and friends.
• Ellen J. Langer, a Harvard psychology professor. “If I don’t let you give me a gift, then
I’m not encouraging you to think about me and think about things I like. I am
preventing you from experiencing the joy of engaging in all those activities. You do
people a disservice by not giving them the gift of giving.”
• Real gift-giving is unconditional. It doesn’t come with a specific value.
• The gifts of patience, wisdom, compassion, tolerance and caring are worth more than
anything money can buy. Give it freely—and daily!
• Gift-giving shouldn’t be an obligation or duty. It should come from the heart.
• The best gifts cannot be stolen or destroyed.
• Don’t ask for gifts—be the giver. We get more happiness and satisfaction that way.

• The wisest man who ever lived said: “There is more happiness in giving than in
receiving.” (Jesus)
• The kind of giving that generates happiness does not go on sale at the end of the year.
In fact, it’s not even for sale. You can’t put a price tag on it, nor can it be mass
produced. And it certainly doesn’t require gift wrapping.
