Kharagauli is an administrative center in Georgia situated along the Chkherimela river at an elevation of 280-400 meters above sea level. It was founded in the 1870s as a railway station and took on administrative and economic roles. Some of its notable features include natural shelters and caves from the Upper Paleolithic era, giant statues along the river banks, and ruins of medieval fortresses nearby including where King Vakhtang VI was married. The area has a long history of settlement dating back to the 14th-11th centuries BC and once had churches that are now in ruins.
