George Washington crossed the Delaware River late on December 25th, 1776 with his troops. This desperate move was needed to boost morale for the troops and capitalize on the Hessians being occupied in Trenton on Christmas eve. The famous painting depicting this crossing was painted by Emmanuel Leutze in 1851 and is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, measuring 12ft. 5in. x 21ft. 3in.
