A recently published article in the Scroll (scroll.in) argues that X should not be held to the high position among
______ that it usually is in India.
The author admits that at some point in her childhood she too was part of the X bandwagon , eagerly waiting
for the better part of the year for Xs to arrive as she ‘didn’t know any better’. That was until she ‘discovered’ Ys.
Ys , she says , even have historical precedence to be crowned superior to Xs . As such Ys can be easily traced
back to the start of humanity , the Trojan War and three Greek goddesses, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite .
Furthermore , she says , if one was to scourge through recent history , Xs were favoured by Akbar , Mirza
Ghalib while Ys were favoured by Catherine the Great and Charles Dickens (who are somehow superior ?).
She says while people discuss about the 40 odd varieties of Xs , the 7500 different varieties offered by Ys goes
largely unnoticed .
What is the article talking about ? / Identify X and Y.
The king of fruits X - Mangoes
Y - Apples
2.
X was a special Treasury Edition comic released by Marvel in 1976 . It marked the return of Jack
Kirby from DC Comics . The concept of releasing a comic adaptation of X started when Marvel
acquired the rights to adapt X in the early 1970s from MGM studios .
The plot of the comic resembles that of its source material ie. Some 21st century scientists
discover something strange on the moon . The comic however , strays away from the source
material when it comes to dialogue . X was touted as a ‘non-verbal experience’ upon its release ,
however , since comics can’t convey the same so easily , the comic is very dense with dialogue ,
meticulously explaining every bit . This may also have to do with the target audience as the
comics generally cater to a much younger audience who are not interested much in the
philosophical intricacies of a given situation .
What did Jack Kirby adapt into a comic / Identify X. (Optional picture on next slide)
3.
Thomas De Mahy was an aristocrat born in 1744 . He was hired by the count of Provence to carry out a
military job in 1789 . However , when his plans were exposed to the public by some whistleblowers , the count
of Provence publicly disavowed him and called for a harsh penalty .
As was the case with many such people at the time , Mahy was sentenced to death . Unlike many people in his
position , Mahy did not chose to implicate other people in this conspiracy , choosing to preserve his honour .
At the time of his hanging , it is said that Mahy said something to the clerk who announced his sentence in
front of the crowd , which would probably make him one of the
fi
rst Xs in the world.
X is a largely modern internet phenomena used to refer to a group of people who routinely correct other
people on a certain thing . A X would probably not be able to point out many such mistakes in this question.
(this could age like milk)
What was this one of the
fi
rst instances of ? / Identify the term X.
Grammar Nazi Thomas De Mahy
“The Patron Saint of Grammar Purists”
4.
Pictured here is Harriet , a tortoise who was
born in 1830 and died in 2006 , in Australia .
She was reportedly collected by X from
Galapagos Islands as part of his round the
world survey expedition in 1835 . In the 2000s
she lived in the Australian Zoo which was
owned by Y , making her the only animal who
was under direct study/care of arguably two
of the most famous wildlife personalities ,
albeit for vastly different reasons .
Identify the two personalities (X and Y).
Charles Darwin
Steve Irwin
5.
The Pokemon game franchise has been subject to a lot of censorship in western regions .
Initially , the game makers tailored the game content for Japanese audiences who were the
intended target . However , as Pokemon became a global phenomena , creators became more
and more wary of such cultural differences , going the extra mile to prevent any mishaps .
At the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl , the company again landed in one such
controversy which was especially highly voiced in the western European region . The outrage
pertained to the character icon of the legendary Pokemon Registeel . According to the
company , this mishap occurred because Registeel as a Pokemon doesn’t have any joints . Due
to this , what was meant to be a friendly ‘hello’ gesture actually came off looking as something
else .
What did the gesture end up looking like ? / Why was the character icon altered ?
Nazi Salute
6.
Daniil Kvyat was a Formula 1 driver whose story is rather tragic . Daniil was signed in 2014 by Red Bull’s sister team
Toro Rosso (now Scuderia Alphatauri) .
The intended use of these sister teams is to nurture future talents who may one day go on to represent the bigger
teams such as Red Bull , Mercedes and Ferrari. Many prominent drivers such as Sebastian Vettel , Carlos Sainz and
Charles Leclerc have come up through these teams.
Daniil was promoted to Red Bull in 2016 due to his impressive form but dropped just 4 races into the 2016 season in
favour of a young , new driver by the name of Max Verstappen who would also go on to win over Daniil Kvyat’s
then girlfriend Kelly Piquet.
Daniil’s up and coming driver image soon faded away. What many had considered a ‘in your face’ driving style
(which would soon be mastered by Verstappen) was quickly rephrased to ‘reckless’ as his race performance
dropped . Instances of him ramming his car into others while braking became commonplace which earned him the
nickname X as the visual of such an accident happening is akin to how a X works in water .
What was the nickname give to Kvyat which is nowadays also associated with George Russel ? / Identify X.

7.
Bo Burnham’s Inside was a 2021 comedy special . The
central theme of the special revolves around a man
(Burnham himself) attempting to stay sane during the
COVID-19 lockdowns by writing and performing a
comedy special con
fi
ned between the 4 walls of his
home.
The special slowly turns into an existential
introspection of life in a lockdown . The ending of the
special (pictured to the right) shows Burnham
fi
nally
fi
nishing the special and leaving his house . It is a
homage to another piece of art from the late 1990s
which also follows a man going through a similar fate .
What is this ending inspired from ?
The Truman Show
8.
Historically , sports was a gentlemanly affair . The common folk didn’t have the time to participate in such activities and
hence sports was a lifestyle choice of the aristocrats . As a consequence , many sports had unwritten rules and uniforms
which were quietly but surely imposed in these private circles .
However , with time , as these sports became open to play for all and championships started to sprout up , regard for these
unwritten rules dwindled. In the case of the sport X , it was meant to be played while wearing a shirt , a
fl
annel pant and a
tie . Recognising that this was much more of an ‘unwritten rule’ , a French athlete (A) in the 1920s started wearing a new
type of shirt which he himself invented by cutting of the sleeves of his usual attire as this would allow free movement of his
hands . This led to the invention of a new kind of clothing which is in fashion till date . Players of X still prefer to wear this
speci
fi
c style of clothing with many of them being sponsored by the brand that the French athlete created in 1930s.
Until the 1970s this was called the X shirt until a famous American fashion designer saw this piece of clothing being worn in
another sport Y and started marketing this piece of clothing by the name of Y shirt which became eponymous with his
fashion brand .
Identify the two sports X and Y (for brownie points , give me the French athlete and the American fashion designer).
X - Tennis
Y - Polo
French Athlete : Rene Lacoste
Fashion Designer : Ralph Lauren

Capernaum is a 2018 Lebanese
fi
lm directed by Nadine Labaki often considered to be a spiritual successor to Sean Baker’s The Florida
Project . Capernaum follows the life of a 12 year old child named Zain , currently in juvenile prison , who sues his parents for his birth.
Capernaum was released at the Cannes
fi
lm festival to rave reviews from the international
fi
lm community. However , many Lebanese
critics voiced their skepticism about the movie .
You see , the movie is basically a
fl
ashback sequence of the hardships faced by Zain which leads him to stab a ‘sonofabitch’ , following
which he is sentenced to 5 years in prison. The Lebanese critics argued that the
fi
lm paints a common evil as the root of all problems Zain
faces rather than giving a nuanced view.
This is exempli
fi
ed in one of the last scenes of the movie where a judge asks Zain what he wants from his parents , to which he replies “that
they don’t have any more ________(8)”.
This movie came out in a time when there was a large immigrant and poverty crisis in Lebanon and the upper class voiced a common
solution towards the same . This solution is coincidentally (or not , I don’t know) the solution that Zain seems to suggest at the end of the
movie which made critics question the movie’s messaging as in whether it was a call for help to the deprived or a propaganda piece by the
privileged.
What solution was suggested by Zain ? / What was the solution voiced by the Lebanese higher society which is often also a solution voiced
in India when addressing the poverty issues plaguing the country ?
Poor people should stop having
children they can’t support
Zain says “I want them to stop having
children as I don’t want anyone else to
suffer my fate”.

Marie Antoinette is a
fi
lm directed by So
fi
a Coppola which was released in 2006. The movie
is a biopic of the French Queen told in a modern rom-com style. The movie is best known for
its intricate set designs and clothing choices as should be expected from a movie set in the
palace of Versailles . The colour palette (read : the colours used in the production design) of
this movie is quite distinct . While many would dismiss it as a ‘pastel-core’ design , it’s far
from it . There are multiple scenes in the movie where there is a pop of glossy colour or as is
the case in the latter half of the movie , more subdued and sad beiges . The colours for this
movie were inspired by a quintessentially French consumable enjoyed by the rest of the
world . The commodity is largely associated with the bourgeoisie.
The following slide contains three stills from the movie . Identify what inspired the colour
palette for this movie ?
Macarons

Bihar-Sharif is the capital of Nalanda district in
Bihar but almost no one in the district calls it by
this name , instead favouring _____ (5).
For an outsider this may lead to immense
confusion as the streets leading to Bihar-Sharif are
laden with posters and banners proclaiming
“_______ (7) __ (2) _____ (5)”. One expects such
posters and banners generally at places like Buxar
and in some towns of Aurangabad/Gaya district.
What do the banners say , which was also an
iconic line of dialogue in the second season of a
wildly popular TV show set in UP/Bihar ?
Bihar mein aapka

Bihar Sharif is usually referred to as Bihar.
So if one wants to go from Patna to Bihar-
Sharif , they would say I want to go from
Patna to Bihar

X is a medical condition that many people suffer from . There is hardly any surgical treatment for the
same . Most treatments for X aim to fasten the natural process of getting rid of a X , or in some cases ,
trying to lessen the pain caused by the natural procedure .
In 2018 , a group of researchers from the US won the Ig Nobel Prize in medicine for their work into an
unconventional way of getting rid of Xs .
The basis of their research was a testimony by one of their patients who claimed that he got rid of his X
after he took part in a certain activity while on vacation with his kids .
The researchers saw some semblance of logic in this as the activity in question does involve fast and
sudden movements of the human body which may move around the X , ultimately leading to its
removal from the body .
What was the research about ? / Identify X and the activity.
Treatment of kidney stones

The Strokes are an American rock band . They have been creating music for a little over 2 decades now . Their
fi
rst album , ‘Is This It’ , till date , remains their most popular album .
The band members of The Strokes are all from well to do backgrounds and thus, through their families , knew
multiple record studio owners . Consequently , Is This It was released simultaneously in the USA , UK and
Australia .
There was a slight change in the versions released in the UK and Australia with respect to the one released in
the USA . The version released in the UK and Australia contained a song titled ‘___(3) ____(4) ____(4) cops’
however , the one released in the USA did not contain this song . Instead , it contained another song titled
‘When it started’ which was entirely different .
The rationale was that given the situation at the time , it did not seem smart to release a song ridiculing ___(3)
____(4) ____(4) cops .
Why was the song not released in the USA version ?
9/11 attacks
The Album was released exactly on September 11th , and
the song in question was titled New York City cops . It
contained the refrain , ‘New York City cops , but they ain’t
too smart’ . It was considered insensitive at the time and
hence replaced . Though , all future versions of the Album
contain the song.
Bonus : here is the Strokes playing New York City cops in
front of New York City cops.

X is set to join a list of companies which have been directly or indirectly ripped off by Y. Y has
been in this business for a long time and has seen the ups and downs of this market . As of late
they have resorted more and more towards copying than creating with net positive results . One
might even say their original creations have been lacklustre when compared to the precision and
seamlessness of their copied ones.
While one could very easily blame Y for such immoral practices , as was done in 2016 , this time
the carpet was laid out for Y to create a carbon copy of X due to there being an abundant supply of
X’s ex-workforce whom Y quickly snapped up. These new employees of Y spearheaded the
development of a X rip-off for Y.
Y has since received a cease and desist letter from X to no real avail .
What did Y create ?

The Soviet Union began its
fi
rst
fi
ve-year economic plan in 1928. Its goals were ambitious from the start, seeking the
immediate transformation of the USSR into an industrial nation. After statistics from the
fi
rst two years indicated that
the plan was ahead of schedule, Joseph Stalin announced that the plan would be completed in four years.
Propagandist Iakov Guminer supported this campaign with a 1931 poster reading "Arithmetic of an alternative plan”.
X used the slogan from the poster for his bestseller Y. In the novel, it is used as an example of an obviously false dogma
that one may be required to believe, similar to other obviously false slogans promoted in the novel.
This slogan was also the title of the opener of Radiohead’s 2003 album Hail the thief . The chorus goes :
“Are you such a dreamer
To put the world to rights?
I'll stay home forever
Where __ and ___ always makes up ____”
What is the slogan in question ?
2+2=5 X : George Orwell
Y : 1984

X was a military engineer in the Roman Empire . He is regarded as an important
fi
gure in the development of the
architectural style which came to be known as Roman architecture.
X is known for many technical advances in the architectural/construction
fi
eld (both of which were one and the
same in Ancient Rome) . He is known as the father of architectural acoustics which is heavily used nowadays in the
construction of auditoriums and theatres .
X , however , does not have any major building credits to his name , he has been described as a man who would
rather theorise architecture and help others to realise buildings .
He is best known for his multi-volume work titled De-architectura which discusses the use of perfect proportion in
architecture as exhibited in nature . This book was considered lost to time around 12th Century AD until it was
rediscovered in the 15th Century by a Florentine humanist .
This book and its discussion would go on to inspire a 15th century artwork which the artist named after X.
What artwork did X’s work inspire ?
Vitruvian Man
X - Vitruvius

Propagandist Iakov Guminer supported this campaign with a 1931 poster reading "Arithmetic of an alternative plan”. X used the slogan from the poster for his bestseller Y. In the novel, it is used as an example of an obviously false dogma that one may be required to believe, similar to other obviously false slogans promoted in the novel. This slogan was also the title of the opener of Radiohead’s 2003 album Hail the thief . The chorus goes : “Are you such a dreamer To put the world to rights? I'll stay home forever Where __ and ___ always makes up ____” What is the slogan in question ?
