Information
On January 31, 1917, Jose M. Maceda, pianist, ethnomusicologist, and National Artist for
Music (1997), was born in Manila.
He dedicated his life to the understanding and popularisation of Filipino traditional music.
● Maceda graduated with a music diploma at the Academy of Music of Manila in
1935 before he was sent to Paris, France where he studied piano. He also studied
musicology at Columbia University, anthropology at Northwestern University, and
ethnomusicology at University of California.

Manila, Philippines. He received a free
education to the Academy of Music in Manila
and became the youngest affiliate of the
Manila Symphony Orchestra.
He is a famous for being a lyricist, his songs treasure life; express nationalistic
sentiments and complete grand philosophies. He is an amazing and resourceful
person because he used the leaf as a musical instrument. Made the Guinness
Book of Records for playing music using leaves.

degree in Composition (1972). In 1977, he went to
the Hochschule der Kuenste in Berlin, Germany to
obtain a diploma in Music Composition. In 1979 he
attended Yale University School of Music and
graduated with a Master of Musical Arts and a
Doctorate in Musical Arts, Composition.
