Supporting a Mastery Curriculum
with FrogPlay
Trinity Academy Halifax
• Opened in September 2010
• Moving in to a new state-of-the-art building in September 2012
• Rated outstanding by OFSTED in July 2013
• 1650 pupils including a sixth form of 270
• Teaching School
• Lead school in the White Rose Maths Hub
Trinity Academy Halifax
• Selected by the DfE to lead on the development of a system
following the removal of levels
• System applied in core subjects
• Students study a section of curriculum in termly blocks
• Students assessed at the end of each block and must have
“Mastered” before progression
The Mastery Pathway
• Highest using school with I am Learning last year
• Students spent 9000 hours working on the system
(active work, not logged in time)
• Engagement from Staff and students high
• Used extensively in Science and Maths depts
Background – I am learning
• Saves teachers time – self marking
exercises
• Students actively enjoy it!
• Used mainly to support KS3 Mastery
curriculum and KS4 revision
Why we use it?
• Low stakes, high fluency testing
• Reporting shows gaps in knowledge
• Science have built their own quizzes to support each block
• Maths use existing IAL quizzes
• Considering the use of IAL in “exams” mode for assessments
• Helping students who need extra support
Supporting Mastery
• In February we moved from
Frog 3 to FrogLearn and I am
learning to FrogPlay
• The move has allowed us to
create great learning
resources which directly link
content to activities
• GCSE revision sites with quizzes
built-in
The Move to FrogLearn/FrogPlay
• As with any new system there have been a few teething problems
• Workflow for setting a quiz alone is different to I am Learning
• Usage initially went down in our core areas but with support
teachers and students are becoming confident again
• Other areas, such as Humanities and English, now on-board
• Working closely with Steve Holt and the team at Frog to shape the
development of Play alongside Learn
The Move to FrogLearn/FrogPlay
• Continue to build use of FrogLearn at the academy
• Ability to have T&L sites linked with quizzes is better than IAL
alone
• Can set combined homeworks of quizzes and other activities
• Science are working to have the whole of TMP built as
FrogLearn sites with rich content and quizzes
• Sites available to both students and parents
• The massive potential of FrogProgress…
