Editor's Notes

  • #2 Most of an iceberg’s bulk lies beneath the surface of the water. We can view the mind in an analogous fashion. Above the water we have the smallest portion of the mind—consciousness. Well below the water lies the unconscious, a region that is not easily accessible. In the middle, we have the preconscious mind. The preconscious can be accessed with a bit of effort. We can remember things that are not immediately available (e.g., names, phone numbers), or not usually attended to (e.g., heart rate). The is the shadowy portion of the iceberg that we can see just below the surface.
  • #3 In the Freudian model, the Id is entirely unconscious, while Ego and Superego are represented in all three regions. Note that the Ego exists mostly in the conscious and preconscious mind, while Superego has a larger unconscious portion.
