Freedom Forum
The Freedom Forum was created in 1991 under the direction of Al Neuharth, former publisher of USA Today
newspaper. Funding was provided by a foundation started by publisher Frank E. Gannett in 1935, called the
Gannett Foundation. The foundation took on the name of The Freedom Forum in 1991.
The Freedom Forum describes itself as "a nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free
spirit for all people."[1]
It runs the First Amendment Center and the Diversity Institute at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. It
is also the creator of the Newseum, a museum dedicated to the history of news, which opened in 2008 in
Washington, D.C..
Each year, the Freedom Forum gives out the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media. Past winners include
Walter Cronkite (1989), Carl T. Rowan (1990), Helen Thomas (1991), Tom Brokaw (1992), Larry King (1993),
Charles Kuralt of CBS (1994), Albert R. Hunt and Judy Woodruff (1995), Robert MacNeil (1996), Cokie Roberts
(1997), Tim Russert and Louis D. Boccardi (1998), John Seigenthaler (1999), Jim Lehrer (2001), Tom Curley
(2002), Don Hewitt of CBS (2004), Garrison Keillor (2005), Bob Schieffer of CBS (2006), John Quinn and Ken
Paulson (2007), Charles Overby (2008) and Katie Couric (2009).
As of July 2011, Charles L. Overby serves as Chairman and CEO of the organization.[2][3] On May 31, 2011, the
organization announced that James C. Duff, the Director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts,
would join the organization as president and CEO.[4]

In August1914 Marcus Garvey established the universal Negro Improvement association an influential nationalist organization in Jamaica where it operated until he moved to England in 1935 ( Sitkoff, 2009). The organization was founded to promote the spirit of race and pride and also create the sense of peace in black people and to unite all Africa and its Diasporas and redeem it from white rule. The UNIA closed in 1982 but it is recognized as a historic landmark by the National Register of Historic Places and the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (Marable, 1991).

The four Freedoms that former President Roosevelt spoke are the Freedom of speech, Freedom of worship, Freedom from want and Freedom from fear. His speech was delivered 11 months before the battle of Pearl Harbor started. “To Roosevelt, the four freedoms expressed deeply held American values worthy of being spread worldwide” (Foner, 2017). Freedom of Speech was the liberty to express your thoughts. Freedom of worship was the liberty to practice any religion. Former President Roosevelt refereed to Freedom from want as the eradication of barriers toward international trade. Subsequently, it became a human right that entails the right of food, shelter and clothing for people. Freedom from fear, which stayed that no nation should engage in violence. These four freedoms motivated other movements that set a precedent. In 1942 The Office of War Information (OWI) was created. This Organization, which was formed to encourage public opinion, was managed by Democrats who fear that “Americans had only a vague understanding of the war purposes and that the populace seemed more fervently committed to paying back the Japanese for their attack on Pearl Harbor than riding the world of Fascism. (Foner, 2017). Also, these four movements encourages women to enter the work force filling out the positions that were empty as men left to war. This was an important period for women to established a precedent by letting the world know that women are capable of much more than to give birth and cook. By 1944 “women made more than one-third of the civilian labor force, and 350,000 served in auxiliary military units”. (Foner, 2017).

President Roosevelt spoke of the four freedoms as freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear all envisioned for a future world. These freedoms were very important to Roosevelt and coined them the “essential human freedoms” and wanted them for every American and soon became his creed. Despite what Roosevelt envisioned for the world, many Americans had a different vision and during World War II, the economy was greatly affected due to the era and end of the Depression. Thousands of women were entering the workforce, labor was increasing, immigrants were moving from place to place and some found home in the military. The main focus of the four freedoms was to establish unity within the country but some Americans were upset of the New Deal and others were looking forward to a new democracy. The four freedoms gave women the power to be involved in the workforce and the modern civil rights movement was initiated, yet some despised this movement.
