5. Day 2 - Portobelo
PORTOBELO
North of Panama City, Portobelo is one of the oldest Spanish
fortifications on the Caribbean coast. “Puerto Bello”, the Beautiful Port,
was named by Columbus in 1502 on his fourth New World journey.
The landscape of the bay lead to it becoming a significant strategic
stronghold. However, this also meant it was the site of numerous
invasions at the hands of English privateers and the Royal Navy.
Pirates also looted Portobelo from time-to-time and were in constant
skirmishes with the Spanish landlords of Panama at that time.
In the 18th century, Portobelo was overrun and never regained
prominence. Later, parts of the city were dismantled to build the
Panama Canal and many of the stones were build in the construction of
the Gatun locks. Currently it is protected as a national park and as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
