Samuel D. Loveless: NOTES FROM AN OLD NOTEBOOK IN A NEW NOTEBOOK; FOR ALL YOU...SignumQuartet
NOTES FROM AN OLD NOTEBOOK IN A NEW NOTEBOOK; FOR ALL YOUR NOTEBOOK NEEDS & SO MUCH MORE
is structured as a flip-notebook in 3 segments, and is taken from his notebooks of the last years.
Here are Sam's performance instruction videos
Full-length performers' description video: https://youtu.be/xXGKb2xpSQM
Brief performers' description video: https://youtu.be/GFX2GXpguKs
The piece is constructed with precise time-brackets. The durations of these time-brackets vary through the piece. Hence, the use of a stopwatch is recommended. The time-brackets of the different strings parts are generally asynchronous and only coincide at the indicated rehearsal marks and on the final note that is indicated with a fermata.
In the parts (Vl. 1, 2, and Vla.), the upper staff indicates the sounding pitches, while the lower staff indicates the fingered notes. The piece is played entirely with either natural harmonics or open strings. Microtones as small as twelfth-tones are indicated in the score in order to precisely determine the position of the node (natural harmonic) and to describe how the sounding tone deviates from twelve-tone equal temperament. Further performance notes are provided in the parts.
Katherine Ching-Fang Teng: "between the clouds" #quartweet (score)SignumQuartet
Between the clouds
The piece is for string quartet, and its inspiration came from daily stargazing. The main materials are designed from the natural night scenery, such as stars, clouds, and moon. Using harmonic and vibrato changes to describe the clouds moving and somehow the starlights go through the clouds. The glissando is the wind which moves the clouds and makes it to any kinds of shape and turn it into a different mood. The double repetitive short notes are the subtle twinkling.
Ellis Howarth: "Remnants" #quartweet
The idea behind this piece was born out of my tutor’s suggestion that I return to my musical roots, to address a growing writer’s block. My musical life began as a chorister, singing music of the medieval and renaissance periods. These three movements are based on fond yet distant memories of those experiences. Hence the piece’s title - Remnants.
To the performers, I ask that this piece be played sempre senza vibrato, and with a purity of tone. All players must play from the full score.
I dedicate this piece to the Signum Quartet. And to Guus, for reminding me of ‘the little English choir boy’, whom I had almost forgotten.
Duration - 4 mins approx.
This document contains a musical score titled "140 Notes" composed by Kevin Volans and published in 2016 by Chester Music Ltd. in London. The score is for string quartet (2 violins, viola, cello) and contains musical notation across 44 measures. It includes performance markings such as glissando, pizzicato, sul ponticello, and more. The copyright is held by Chester Music Ltd.
Oscar Bettison:
Described as possessing "an unconventional lyricism and a menacing beauty" and a “unique voice”, British/American composer Oscar Bettison's music has been commissioned and performed by leading ensembles and soloists around the world. His work demonstrates a willingness to work within and outside the confines of concert music. He likes to work with what he calls "Cinderella instruments", either by making percussion instruments or by re-imagining other instruments as well as writing for instruments more common in rock music and the inclusion of electro-acoustic elements. More recent pieces have been concerned with bringing these strands together. His music as been featured and reviewed in the LA Times, the New York Times, the British, Dutch and Italian press as well as having been played on radio throughout the US, Australia, Britain, The Netherlands and Brazil and on British and Dutch Television. His latest work has been described as “pulsating with an irrepressible energy and vitality, as well as brilliant craftsmanship.”

6. Lullaby of the Wings
‘Queer, how you stalk and prowl the air
In circles and evasions, enveloping me,
Ghoul on wings
Winged Victory.’
The Mosquito by D.H. Lawrence
The different lines indicate the speed and fierceness of the vibrato.
The note should imitate the sound of a mosquito’s buzz.
Very big, wide and fast.
Starting small and fast, getting wider and quicker.
Move between ponticello and sul tasto continuously until the end of the note.
