Forms and conventions of Leon
One key theme in Leon is revenge, this is key because Matilda wants to seek revenge
from the men that killer her brother, they killed her family but she didn’t care as she
was treated wrongly by them which forced her to hate them. She only cared about her
brother as she was forced to look after him at such a young age as her parents didn’t
care for their children as much as they should of. Another key them is crime and it
gives of the sense of living with crime. We are watching a film based on a world of
drug dealers and murderers. Matilda even ends up being taken in by a hit man who
she then wants to learn of to get revenge on the men who killed her brother.
Leon’s character is weird from the start, however when we get to know him we realise
he is a hit man. He is middle aged and very mysterious and secretive, he is skilled as
he takes on a whole gang without any of them seeing him in less than 5 minutes
which also shows he lives with danger. However as an audience he gets a good
reaction as he takes on a little innocent girl to bring up. He always talks to her when
he goes out and he always looks like he’s thinking of killing her parents to save her.
Leon also takes care of a plant which gives of the impression of him wanting someone
to look after and now he has got that. This is why he is always in an apartment block
because he likes being surrounded by people and not alone. Leon also has a boss
called tony. He is an Italian gangster and always has Leon’s back until the end when
Leon kills people to protect Matilda. She is an innocent that is surrounded by crime
which makes us feel sorry for her. We always see her smoking at such a young age
and it makes us react because we don’t want her to be doing things she shouldn’t
because she is so young. There are also gangsters and drug dealers but a character the
spectator would hate would be Stan, he is a psychopathic criminal who killed her
family and is responsible for killing her brother. He is a corrupt police man and that’s
why we hate him, but the main reason being that he killed Matilda’s brother whom
she was very close to, he was like her only friend as everyone else bullied her.
The audio visual style is strong at the beginning as the opening is all filmed in close
ups not showing us who is killing all these people, we then later on know it was Leon
whom we grow to like. There are many noir elements in the opening which shows
Leon emerging from the shadows which creates the sense of him being unable to see
as he is so skilled and brilliant at his job. We want him to be victorious and believe no
one will be able to take him down.
As this is a crime film we expect the iconography of the guns and it being the urban
world as this is a strong stereotype used in many films. Hotels are used to signify they
can’t stay in the same place for a long time because people are tracking them down as
he is a wanted man, for killing so many people. We always see Leon wearing
sunglasses as he always wants to see his victim clearly as you never know what could
happen, it’s like he always wants to be one up on his victim so he knows there every
move so he can make a better one. He wears a hat that creates the sense of care which
shows that he actually has a soft side to him.
The narrative is always opposites against each other, in this case its good against evil
but it isn’t really as Leon is good which shows it’s good and evil against evil. Matilda
is caught up in a situation she doesn’t want to be in and would try her hardest to avoid

it but it’s beyond her control. The narrative is suspenseful and action packed which
keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. The most action happens when Leon the
police are trying to kill Leon and when he is killer the whole gang in the opening.
