Formal Letter on English Background
I am writing this letter to explain on my English Language background as a self-testimony for
applying as an Assistant Language Teacher(ALT) in Japan.
30th January 2016
To whom it may concern,
It had come to my attention that a letter of testimonial on my English background is needed
in order to make the screening of applicants much easier.
I was raised as a trilingual since I was an infant with the tree languages being English, Malay
and Chinese. Among all three of the stated languages, English had been my subject of interest
and had been my preferred language to use.
As a child growing up in Malaysia, there is no lack of opportunity to use English language in
the country whether within the society or even in education. This is most probably because
Malaysia is a part of the Commonwealth Nation and also that Malaysia acknowledges
English as a Second Language in our country.
Growing up, I am also influenced by Western cultures mainly from the English and
Americans. With the internet boom starting from the early of the millennia, there had been
fewer barriers between me in accessing the information which resulted whether directly and
indirectly to my English repertoire and proficiency.
In school, my English scores always been the best among all the other subjects that I have
taken. Compared with my peers who prefer to speak in their mother tongue, I preferred to
speak English with whoever I come across.
After high school, I decided to further improve my subject of interest along with other reason
in hand led to my taking Foundation in Bachelor in Education majoring in Teaching English
as a Second Language (TESL) and later on continued in that line and obtained my Bachelor’s
Degree in Education majoring in TESL. In this period, I am taught on various teaching
pedagogy regarding teaching English to non-native speakers.
I had also gone for my teaching practicum as an English teacher at the end of my course.
After I had completed my teaching practicum, I took up a job as a substitute English teacher
in the district of Malacca and as a part time I took a job as an English teacher in a tuition
center in the area where I teach Secondary school students English.
In summary, English had always been my subject of interest and I had further develop my
English proficiency and had become an English teacher and teaching English is area of
expertise now.
Yours sincerely,
Chew Ai Wen
