Austria imports much of its food from other countries due to its central location in Europe. This allows supermarkets to offer fruits and vegetables year-round, not just when they are in season locally. While some prefer locally-grown and fair trade products, others want foods not available in Austria. There has been a rise in organic supermarkets and farms in Austria in response to consumer demand for sustainable and locally-sourced food options.
1. Food and transportation of our food
Austria is a country very central located in Europe.
So lots of things which are transported from one country to another
are coming through Austria. So aswell lots of things are coming to
Austria.
In supermarkets we can find food from all over the world.
Because of that we can eat fruits and vegetables all over the year not
only when it is their season in Austria.
In Austria, especially in Salzburg, people more and more are going to
by local and fairtrade products, if they can afford it. Even if they are a
bit more expensive.
But of course there are somethings the people want to buy and they
don´t exist in Austria.
That for in Austria it is a law that every fruit and every vegetable has
to be signed out where it is from.
Nowadays there are more biological supermarkets in Salzburg.
People like to go and buy there things there.
2. Where does our food come from?
Austria is not a great exporter but a very important country for
exports, because of the geographical location. We import lots of
fruits from the countries which are more in the south.(especially
during winter time)
Austria is well known for exporting apples, pears and potatoes.
Potatoes are mostly fromupper austria.
The most exported apples are from Styria and the mostexported pears are
from
3. Austria's farmers areincreasingly turning to organic farming: In 2008, 20,000
organic farmers edit about15% of Austria's agriculturalland [78], with a total
shareof almost 10%, Austria has the highest density of organic farms in the
European Union. The most important agriculturalregion is the March Field near
Vienna.
So Austria is exporting fruits and vegetables but hunting and fishing are rather
insignificant and are usually operated only for the domestic market or as a
hobby
