Livingstone
“A journey of self-discovery, improvement and the determination of an endeavouring
and aspirational girl - Ruby-Anne Livingstone. It’s said that where you’re from
determines your future, but not in this case; heavily focused on her aspirations of
leaving the damaged, gritty and dull life of a council-estate in the suburbs of London
behind to become a successful businesswoman with a story in her inventory. She
drastically changes her life only through her own hard work. Fixating on becoming
“one of them women in suits ”. It’s guaranteed this coming of age story will touch
home with a lot people out there and affect a lot of people’s hearts.
Closely relating to Todorov’s theory
Equilibrium - The movie starts on a bad note, she lives in a not-so-wealthy
environment, having parents that don’t have the same values she does which leave
her to be the blacksheep of the family. Constantly isolated from the “ideal” nuclear
family, leaves her time to thoroughly think about breaking out of this life and work
towards a new one.
Disruption - Still relating to the equilibrium, only things worsen and family life starts
to become intense with an abusive father and no friends to seek solace only thing
left is to dream herself way out of reality.
Realisation - Ruby sees what’s holding her back, yet it’s the force that pushes her
forward to achieve her aspirations.
Resolution - After a period of a hectic and rough upbringing she receives a
scholarship for maths which her family deem as “not needed”. This enables her to
afford university and finally move out of her home into university life.
New equilibrium - Finally reaching her goal, she’s able to proceed forward into life
and never looking back.
Why a Drama?
By committing to the Drama genre, it enables me
to have the passage to broadcast an influential
storyline, that also will contain decoded
message in which the audience will decode to
obtain a message or a moral.
A drama gives an insight to lives of people who
may not be reachable or in the public eye, by
showing light on these people it doesn’t just
serve the purpose of entertainment but also a
lesson of a new culture and way of living; by
heightening the knowledge of the audience it will
leave them to feel appreciative of what they have
in life or, in this case, aspire to be.
My purpose is to enlighten knowledge of social
realism, enabling the audience to seek
confinement and to an extent - entertainment.
Genre: social realism drama
How can I use it?
By following the Uses And Gratification Theory, I
will aid me into projecting my purpose furthermore;
for example, the cognitive needs I will not cut out
what really happens in the life of unfortunate
people, I want to shed realism and emotion so the
audience can see what actually happens in
different cultures - for the integration of society.
As well, affective needs using emotive and
impactful scenes to gain sympathy for character
roles will keep the audience engaged; and to an
extent, abling to seek confinement within these
character roles, being able to take advice from
them to help rebuild confidence and their life.
Finally, personal needs - a social realist drama will
help establish character, helping the audience
know they aren’t alone in their situation and can
follow the advice characters will give.
Target
Audience
Aspirers preferably aged 16-
20 who seek status and
dreams, by showing the main
character reach her goal
through determination and
endeavouring attributes they
will see they have to work for
their dreams.
Succeeders - Seeks
control. Strong goals,
confidence, work ethic,
and organisation.
Supports stability.
Brand choice based on
self-reward and
equality. Typically
higher management
and professionals.
Resigned - typically 30-50 - Seeks survival. Rigid
and authoritarian values. Interested in the past
and tradition. Brand choice stresses safety,
familiarity and economy.
Strugglers - Seeks escape. Alienated and
disorganised. Few resources beyond physical
skills. Brand choice involves impact and sensation.
Reformers - Seeks
enlightenment.
Freedom of restrictions
and personal growth.
Social awareness and
independent
judgement.
Films I seek influence from
Billy Elliot (2000)- How his disintegration of his dreams and family affect him. Also
based in England and how rough it is. It got turned into a musical in the West-end
and Broadway.
Kidulthood (2006) - Showing light on teenagers growing up in West London, with
the difficulties that appear. Widely popular with teens of London and its catch
phrases online.
Rollin’ With The Nines (2006) - A group of friends determined to set-up a
successful underground urban garage act that will aid them to leaving their
struggling lives behind. It earned:
Focusing on the idea of terrible backgrounds that are holding back teenagers,
which is also the catalyst for them to succeed and achieve what they desire
and set out to do. Closely relating to the values of the characters of the
environment they live in; such as, family, friends, status and respect.
Casting
For the director, I believe Noel Clarke will be most suited because he has previously shot
similar films. I believe we both have the same vision and imagination that when both
mixed will help create this aesthetic. Being an immensely popular and award-winning
director within the UK who’s most known for shooting Star Trek into the darkness,
Kidulthood, Adulthood and Dr Who. So I guarantee he’s up mostly reliable in order to
create a success in the box office.
Main character roles will be:
▸ Kaya Scodelario as “Ruby” who’s mostly known for Clash Of The Titans, The Maze
Runner, Skins, and Moon. She's widely popular in the UK and people will instantly
falling in love with her charm and mysterious sense about her.
▸ Noah Taylor as the father, mostly populated for his roles in, Charlie And The
Chocolate Factory, Tomb Raider, Almost Famous and Submarine.
▸ Craig Roberts as a friend of “Ruby” - the BAFTA winning actor who has played in,
Submarine alongside Noah Taylor, The First Time and Hollywood blockbuster 22
Jump Street.
Distribution and Marketing
Marketing of this movie will help aid in the success, so doing it horizontally it will allow more funding
will will boost the popularity of the movie. I understand all-British movies do not do as well in the box
office that’s why i’m taking the day-and-date route to help the gross of the movie; it’s convenient
that Film4 are owned by Channel 4 so the movie can be broadcasted on TV (if pay Sky or Virgin)
for free.
By distributing across the Country to around 400 cinemas will be the right amount to help gain an
exchange with the audience, creating media attraction that will later boost DVD sales. After the 90
day period, by releasing it on DVD and VOD it will also aid the movie in curating a higher gross and
also help in heightening the popularity of the movie.
I will want to gather as many USPs as possible in order to help the movie gross, that’s why Justin
Vernon, the Canadian superstar who has helped produce tracks from the likes of Kanye West to St.
Vincent and also add his own spin to movies such as Twlilight: New Moon, I Wish I was Here and
Warm Bodies, has agreed in making his comeback with the soundtrack to this film. This will act as a
synergy for both art forms to help obtain attention and popularity. As well, selling the movie’s
soundtrack exclusively to iTunes.
So, i’m asking for a fund of £650,000 to help make the
dream a reality: the production of the movie including
cameras, lighting and sound. As well as mise-en-scene.
The cast funding, exhibiting the movie and the final touches
such as DVD production.
