Thomas Bassett from the SuomiVaihto 2016 exchange program had preconceptions about Finland before arriving that were challenged during his time there. He hoped to build strong relationships with Finnish companions, share international knowledge to create software/technology, and gain greater cultural awareness. Through the exchange, he learned Finnish people work quickly, simple technology can vastly improve lives, not all know Santa personally, Finnish people are proud, and gender equality is valued. International experiences help develop skills valued by employers and allow greater professional responsibility.

Editor's Notes
Suomi Vaihto – Finland Exchange
As Finland is part of Scandinavia I assumed that Finnish people had to be rich due to the prices in Scandinavia
‘No wi-fi, No life’- as I know Finland is big on Its IT combined with a previous trip to Estonia I gained the perception that any place without wi-fi wasn’t good
Very Naïve of me to assume that Finland is colder than the UK but just what I thought
The home of Lapland which is obviously the home of Santa, such a small population surely everyone knows him personally? Similar to the UK stereotype that everyone has tea with the queen?
Odotuksia – Expectations
Relationship- Networking in an international environment is very important for my future career and hope that I can stay close with these people so that an opportunity may arise
Knowledge – Building a piece of software up to a professional standard so that it could benefit a client in the future, the knowledge combined could bring in new technology and see how the software/technology could be implemented in the two different cultures
Awareness – Gaining cultural awareness about Finland was a must for me, this enhances my employability for the future as employers value international experiences, who knows I may be deployed in Finland one day?
Work Pace- On previous academic exchanges in Europe I have noticed the work pace is a lot slower and more relaxed than the UK, such as Switzerland, Germany and Estonia but Finnish people work at a similar pace as the UK which was excellent for me as we completed the project very quickly and up to a high standard.
Technology- The trip to Hereward college was eye opening and creating a technology to help people in their difficult lives was not only pleasing but satisfying to know that our group posses the knowledge to build these technologies
Santa – Despite being Finnish nobody knows him personally
The Fins- Any achievement is celebrated in Finland and they are proud people of their achievements, just how it should be, they all seem to be happy people in comparison to the UK
Gender- Unlike most countries both genders are treated the same in all aspects of life with many advanced positions in the country being held by females and not predominantly males
Transversal Skills- Problem Solving, Confidence, Recruiting and Team work are skills which I have developed throughout the exchange which employers will value very highly, global business requires team work on an international level and with a head start on this I am improving my employability skills
International experiences – It has been proven that employers will value an international experience over non international experiences, the cultural awareness and communication with international people will benefit in jobs so this also helps my employability
Professional – Being professional now is a paramount importance for employers as businesses rely on professional people, having international experiences boosts this skill due to the responsibility that is needed in a foreign country such as looking after yourself and problem solving can be transferred to the work place.
If ever I was deployed by a business on an international scale I would have a better advantage than others and my employability will be increased.
Kiitos – Thank You
