2011 WALKLEY YOUNG AUSTRALIAN JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR
FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
Monday, May 2, 2011
In a display of true dedication to their craft, many of this year’s finalists risked their
personal safety in order to cover local and international issues for their communities,
producing work described by judges as “an inspiration to aspiring journalists around the
country.”
The Walkley Foundation is delighted to announce this year’s finalists in the Walkley
Young Australian Journalist of the Year Awards.
More than 110 journalists, aged 26 or younger, submitted entries this year and the 15
finalists have been chosen across five categories: print, radio, television, online and
photography.
Finalists’ stories cover a diverse range of topics including: natural disasters, neglect in
aged care, indigenous affairs, immigration, government corruption and international
affairs.
Judges said that finalists showed “good news sense and an ability to cover tragic events
with maturity and emotional sensitivity.”
Media Alliance Federal Secretary, Christopher Warren, said: “It is inspiring to see a crop
of finalists whose work covers some of the most significant social, political and
environmental stories of the last 12 months with such professionalism.”
“Their work has provided an invaluable service to their respective communities and
serves as an example of the calibre of young talent being fostered in newsrooms around
the country.”
Winners in each category will be announced at an awards ceremony in Sydney on
Tuesday, June 21, along with the overall winner of the 2011 Walkley Young Australian
Journalist of the Year, who will receive a once-in-a-lifetime, all-expenses-paid trip to visit
international media outlets, hosted by the likes of the BBC and CNN.
Finalists in each category are listed below and we wish each the very best of luck.
