Hannah Dillon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with double majors in Anthropology and Languages and Cultures of Asia. She has since worked as an AmeriCorps member and literacy coordinator for City Year Milwaukee, providing support to students reading below grade level and designing literacy programs. Previously, she was a head foreign teacher at BMA Academy in South Korea, where she created curricula and lesson plans, trained other teachers, and helped students advance to more advanced English levels. She has skills in Thai, German, and teaching English as a foreign language.

City Year is an education-focused organization founded in 1988 dedicated to helping students and schools succeed. As an
AmeriCorps Member serving South Division High School, my primary responsibilities include:
• Providing whole class support for four reading intervention classes in which most students read below a 6th
grade reading
level, the majority of students have IEPs, and the students are expected to increase their Lexile by 100 points each semester
• Supporting a sheltered English class of approximately 25 students in which the majority are refugees from Thailand,
Myanmar, Malaysia, Somalia, Iran, Kurdistan, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and the Karen State
• Designing and implementing original lesson plans for small group tutoring sessions that complement the classroom’s
curriculum based on STAR test data with a goal of 75% of focus list students achieving more than expected growth by the
end of the school year
• Reviewing STAR test data with students regularly and assisting with the creation of improvement plans
• Participating in formal observation and coaching process from Senior Corps Members and City Year Staff while also
receiving constructive advice from skilled partner teachers
• Collecting, recording, and documenting attendance data in order to identify the reasons why most students miss school while
also collaborating with corps members to increase student attendance and keep students in school with attendance incentives
• Collaborating with teammates to redesign South Division High School’s afterschool program in which we will be designing
an original curriculum based on students’ needs, along with homework help and tutoring
• Calling parents throughout the week to address reasons why students are absent while also making positive phone calls
home with a goal of making 100 calls per month as a team
• Participated in annual South Division High School data chats in which City Year Corps Members and counselors paired
together to discuss STAR test results and provide 20 minute individual conversations with students about how they can
improve their scores by creating long term and short term SMART goals [discussed data with 90% of freshman present that
day (237 out of 265 students)]
• Co-planning Spring Break service learning projects for the Milwaukee Corps of approximately 100 members on a diverse
team of six individuals
• Auditioned and selected to join the Physical Training Crew [20 members] which assists leading City Year Unity Rally on
Friday Mornings in front of the entire corps [100 members]
Literacy Coordinator Role
• Enhancing a culture of literacy at South Division High School by reviewing English and Language Arts lesson plans,
observing and critiquing English and Language Arts small group sessions, and creating literacy posters and initiatives
• Implemented a Literacy Night and Talent Show event in which over 100 students and parents attended

• Instructed 25 first through sixth grade classes per week ranging in levels from beginner to advanced [approximately 200
students] and also called each student at home twice per month
• Designed original curriculum, lesson plans, and projects for all of my classes, while also adjusting lesson plans for various
class dynamics and catering lessons to the learning styles of my students
• Utilized school’s computer software to complement lessons
• Observed, trained, and provided constructive feedback to new teachers, while also critiquing their lesson plans and
providing lesson planning support for their first few weeks in Korea
