Welcome	2016	North-Central	ACDA	Conference	friends,
It	is	a	great	pleasure	to	welcome	you	to	the	University	of	Wisconsin-Stevens	Point	Department	of	Theatre	&
Dance	and	2016	North-Central	Regional	ACDA	Conference.	Our	conference	theme,	Presence	In	Practice,	has
guided	how	we	envisioned,	planned,	and	organized	this	week’s	array	of	events.
Presence	In	Practice	provides	a	key	lens	for	all	student	and	faculty	participants. Throughout	the	sessions	we’ll
be	taking	an	intimate	and	thoughtful	look	at	the	many	ways	we	create,	perform,	view,	think	about,	and	discuss
dance.	We	encourage	you	to	consider	how	presence	impacts	your	work,	how	practice	sustains	you	and,
ultimately,	how	presence	in	your	own	practice	generates	new	levels	of	understanding	and	enriched	engagement.
The	Chicago	based	RE|dance	group	kicks	off	the	conference	with	a	performance	of	The	Lonely	Visitors,	a	dance-
theatre	work	that	embodies	Presence	In	Practice.	Throughout	the	week	fresh	perspectives	and	new	information
shared	by	the	exciting	roster	of	guest	artists	and	faculty	will	stimulate	discovery	and	inspire	artistry.
ACDA	and	UWSP’s	Dance	Program	value	diversity	and	presenting	a	conference	reflective	of	the	many	forms,
approaches	to,	and	traditions	of	dance. We	are	interested	in	furthering	the	dialogue	about	dance	in	higher
education	and	the	larger	presence	of	dance	in	our	world.
We	are	excited	to	welcome	our	diverse	regional	dance	community	to	this	unique	conference	and	creative
gathering.	We	look	forward	to	a	physically	and	intellectually	adventurous	event	and	time	to	enjoy	and	be
rejuvenated	by	each	other’s	company.

RE|dance	group	is	led	by	Lucy	Vurusic	Riner	and	Michael	Estanich,	creative	partners	dedicated	to	the
presentation	of	dance	theatre	works	that	explore	personal,	intimate	human	relationships. The	instability	and
possibilities	of	charged	relationships	act	as	symbols	for	living	in	a	volatile,	contemporary	world. We	ground	our
artistic	philosophy	in	creative	exchange,	seeking	to	expand	our	voices	as	contemporary	artists.	Our	work	reflects
a	rigorous	inquiry	into	the	body's	capability	for	expression	through	motion	and	movement—from	the	subtle	to
the	immense. Our	dances	embody	a	heightened	physical	experience	rich	with	emotional	content	and	dramatic
imagery.	The	winding	path	from	imagined	concept	to	physical	reality	to	audience	experience	intrigues	us	and
grounds	our	process.	The	creative	process	is	an	ever	evolving	dynamic	between	intention,	honesty,	intuition,
and	play. Though	we	call	Chicago	homebase	for	RE|dance	group,	the	partnership	relies	on	a	unique	long
distance	collaboration. We	became	fascinated	with	the	idea	of	creating	work	in	a	new	way—generating
movement	material	while	we	were	together	and	developing	characters	or	deepening	our	personal
understaniding	of	ideas	while	we	were	apart.	Through	conversation	and	dialogue	we	establish	physical
memories	that	enrich	our	dancing	and	the	relationships	created	in	the	works.

Anonymity	Reminder	for	Conference	Participants
To	all	conference	participants:

Just	a	reminder…the	adjudication	process	is	structured	to	ensure	that	the	adjudicators	do	not	know	the	names
of	schools	or	choreographers	presenting	work	in	the	adjudication	concerts. This	ACDA	policy	allows	the
selection	process	to	be	as	objective	as	possible. In	order	to	keep	the	integrity	of	this	policy	and	process	in	tact
through	the	adjudicators’	final	decision,	it	is	necessary	to	ask	all	conference	participants	to	avoid	conversation
with	adjudicators	about	the	adjudicated	dances,	the	adjudication	process,	or	their	comments	during	the
feedback	session.	In	addition,	please	do	not	discuss	your	school’s	programs	or	your	own	work	with	the
adjudicators.	Your	full	cooperation	is	being	requested	for	the	enjoyment	of	all	conference	participants,	including
the	adjudicators!

Thank	you	in	advance!

NATIONAL	COLLEGE	DANCE	FESTIVAL
The	National	College	Dance	Festival,	a	biennial	event,	showcases	on	the	national	level	the	outstanding
quality	of	choreography	and	performance	that	is	being	created	on	college	and	university	campuses. Dances	are
selected	by	the	adjudicators	from	each	of	the	regional	conferences	based	on	their	outstanding	artistic	excellence
and	merit. Approximately	30	schools	from	around	the	country	will	be	invited	to	perform	in	one	of	the	three	gala
concerts.
The	total	number	of	dances	adjudicated	at	each	conference	determines	the	number	of	dances	selected
from	that	conference. Adjudicators	select	dances	for	the	National	Festival	after	viewing	the	regional	gala
concert. The	same	anonymity	policies	apply	to	the	National	Festival	selection	as	apply	to	the	regional	gala
selection. Only	one	dance	from	a	school	may	be	selected	for	the	National	Festival,	even	if	that	school	had	two

Conference	Policies	for	the	National	Festival

1.	In	a	National	Festival	year,	a	fully	produced	Gala	Concert	comprised	of	adjudicated	works	must	be	presented
at	each	Regional	Conference.
2.	The	adjudicators	are	solely	responsible	for	the	selection	of	works	for	the	National	Festival.
3.	The	pieces	chosen	for	the	National	Festival	will	be	selected	from	those	performed	in	the	Gala	Concert.
4.	In	a	National	Festival	year,	the	Gala	Concert	program	for	adjudicators	will	have	no	identifying	information
beyond	title,	year	originally	choreographed,	and	music.
5.	All	National	Festival	selections	must	be	made	following	the	regional	Gala	Concert	to	allow	for	a	second
viewing.
6.	All	rules	listed	in	“Adjudication	Policies	for	Participating	Schools”	apply	to	works	selected	for	the	National
Festival.
7.	ACDA	strongly	believes	that	overall	excellence	is	the	most	important	criterion	in	selecting	dances	for	National
Festival	concerts. Quality	of	both	performance	and	choreography	must	be	considered	for	each	work	selected.
8.	In	National	Festival	years,	the	number	of	selections	made	from	the	regional	Gala	Concert	for	presentation	at
the	National	Festival	is	based	on	the	number	of	pieces	being	adjudicated. The	Executive	Committee
Representative	will	inform	the	adjudicators	of	this	number	and	any	other	rules	guiding	National	Festival
selection.
9.	Adjudicators	must	also	select	one	or	two	alternate	works.
10.	No	more	than	one	work	from	any	one	institution	will	be	selected	for	the	National	Festival.
11.	Works	must	be	selected	for	the	National	Festival	in	their	entirety	as	performed	for	adjudication	with	no
requirements	for	editing.
12.	An	Executive	Committee	member	or	approved	substitute	must	review	decisions	regarding	the	National
Festivals	prior	to	their	announcement.
13.	National	Festival	selections	will	not	be	announced	until	after	the	conference	has	concluded.	They	will	be
posted	on	the	conference	website	within	24	hours	after	the	conference	concludes. Posting	will	include	names	of
the	selected	dances	and	the	alternates	selected.	Additionally,	the	adjudicators	will	collectively	write	comments
for	each	work	including	their	reasoning	for	their	selections.
14.	The	Conference	Coordinator	will	provide	the	National	Office	with	a	high	quality,	accurate,	color	DVD
documentation	or	other	acceptable	format	(e.g.,	high	definition	.mov	or	.mpeg	file)	of	the	Gala	Concert..
Appropriately	labeled	DVD’s	and	a	Gala	program	must	be	sent	to	the	National	Office	immediately	following	the
conference.
15.	The	Conference	Coordinator	must	secure	video	waivers	from	the	choreographers	of	works	appearing	in	a
Gala	Concert	and	send	them	with	the	recording	directly	to	the	National	Office. Video	waivers	must	be	collected
for	all	adjudicated	works;	only	waivers	for	the	dances	in	the	gala	concert	should	be	forwarded	to	the	national
office.	All	DVD’s	will	become	the	property	of	the	American	College	Dance	Association	Archives.
