1. it is pretty obvious that the concept of the bio brick circuit is a hard part in biology lessons. The undergraduate or high students have difficulties in comprehending the abstract concepts.
1. We handed out questionnaires to 923 students, who have been taught concepts of synthetic biology in nineteen middle schools in china. And we have found that, 497 of them, about 53.8% didn't really get the idea of what is bio-bricks and how they works.
1. So in order to solve these difficulties, we made an innovative and tangible teaching kit with bio-brick models called the 1 kg bio-box.
1. We used the idea of lego and electric circuit when making the bio-brick model. Think about it, you can actually imagine bio-bricks as lego like building blocks that are connected to each other to approach different functions like elements in an electric circuit . * so what we have done is we made bio-bricks into actual touchable models similar to lego, and innovatively combined the ABSTRACT bio brick circuit with electric circuit that high school students are really familiar with.
1. So here is how the game goes. Suppose I am a kid from grade 10 that attended the one kilo bio-box synthetic biology game. The game is set in the background that a polluted river needs us to reconstruct a plasmid in a e.coli and create a testing kit to find out the cause of the pollution. So the game's final mission is to find out the correct order of the bio-bricks and put it into the ecoli model. But what is bio-bricks and what is the correct order?
1. To answer these questions, we went over some missions provided in the box and got synthetic biology clues for the final mission. By analyzing the clues and working with the biobrick models in the final mission, i have totally got the idea of what is biobricks and how it works.
1. So now i will give you guys a live demo of our box. In the final mission, you have to put the bio-bricks models into correct order according to the clues, like this, and once you did that, the proteins here on the e.coli board will light up. (change the order.) and if the order is incorrect, like if i swap the terminator and promoter, the lights won't go up.
1. As you can see, this box allows teenagers to actually get their hands onto the bio-bricks and physically experience the idea of how the bio bricks connect each other in specific sequence and how they function.
1. So now let's take a look at the programs we provide after the game. the teenagers scan the QR code printed on the ecoli board model and enter our WEiGEM2.0 official account, there are online courses and articles for further knowledge of synthetic biology and also guidance to IGEM.
1. Like this one asked how does the ecoli approach different functions, so we added three sets of biobricks for the coding area. When you put different biobricks into the plasmid, different color lights will light up representing different functions.
Moreover, there are questionnaires where users interacted with our team and give us feedbacks..according to these feedbacks, we have constantly improved our project. Here are some feed backs we have got.
1. and this one informed that the clues in the box is actually a little bit to easy for her, so we made different versions of the 1 kg bio-box for different age groups,--kids, junior, senior, and undergraduates..
1. This summer, we found Aiju, a social enterprise, we cooperated with them and with the help of Aiju, the influence range of our box widened
to 556 schools,
to 55,600 students.
1. That means, 10% of the Chinese high schools and its student can get to know synthetic biology and everyone of them will have the chance to become one of us here, isn't it incredible?
1. So you may ask How does our box spread? Well, our box is reusable and available for any one,any school, for other teams, for engager or for educators. All you have to do is apply on our official account or through aiju and bring the box back in classroom.! What's more, our box can be used as many times as you want, that means, the influence of one particular box can significantly keep building up in the whole school.
Lately, we have been trying out our box in schools in china. Here are some picture taken from the games.

1. We did a survey after each of the game, we asked 216 students three question,* first, did you have fun? 90.6%(196) said yes.* Second, did you get the idea of synthetic biology? 83.7%(181) said yes. * And the most exciting thing was when we asked them, are you willing to learn more about synthetic biology? 70.3%(152) said yes.
1. So today we are presenting you the 1 kg bio-box, the tangible teaching tool that lets students feel synthetic biology with their hands. We hope that one day, this great teaching tool can brighten every bio lecture in china, and hopefully in america, and in the world.
