The Filet-O-Fish sandwich almost didn't make it onto McDonald's national menu. In 1962, Ray Kroc was planning to launch a Hula Burger but a Cincinnati franchisee urged McDonald's to roll out his breaded whitefish sandwich nationwide to serve Catholics observing Lent. Kroc and the franchisee made a bet - whichever item sold more on a Friday would be added to the permanent menu. The Filet-O-Fish won and has been on McDonald's menu ever since.
