• As you work on the computer you use different software
applications to create and update files (word documents,
spreadsheets, etc.)
• Files created in different applications are formatted
differently
• There are many similar programs that do the same thing.
E.g.
Microsoft Word = Open office Text document
4. Different file/software types
• Computers running Windows can save files with long file
names followed by a dot and a three character file
extension
E.g.
doc.- Word Documents
gif.- An image file (GIF format)
jpg.- An image file (JPEGformat)
ppt- PowerPoint Presentation
5. Converting Files
• Basically you are changing file types into other file types
• And a perfect example of this is a Word Document into a
PDF(Portable Document Format)

• Possibly one of the most used
conversions.
• Is where you change a Word Document
into a PDF
• The reason you would want to do this as a PDF is
compatible with most computers in the world and its
small (doesn’t take up much memory)
• You must download a file called “doPDF” to do this
operation
