What are the latest trends and issues facing accounting and business? What are the outlooks for careers in accounting, finance, information systems and business majors?
Tom Hood, CEO of the MACPA and Business Learning Institute covers this and career advice for accounting students in this inspirational keynote.
Self-employed, "1099" workers represent the new face of America's economy. Here, Core Innovation Capital examines this fundamental shift in the nature of work, the ramifications that 1099 status has on Americans' financial lives, and the technology companies that are rising to address novel financial pain points.
the BOUNCE - Maximizing Your Career Trajectory - AICPA EDGE ConferenceTom Hood, CPA,CITP,CGMA
In a world of constant change and increasing complexity, the winners will be those who can keep their rate of learning faster than the rate of change, both as individuals and as organizations. Tom will explain why Business Learning Institute developed the “bounce” as an organizing framework to help develop a strategic and systematic approach to sustain increased and collective rate of learning. The Bounce is all about trajectory (direction), alignment & acceleration. Make sure you’re in the ballgame to win.
There is a fundamental path to success for every CPA, we call the bounce. It is the shift from mentor to mentee, from technician to leader that happens at the manager job level. It shifts the focus from task specific work to managing people and projects. This critical turning point is where BLI makes a difference. From our Leadership Academy (now being offered at the AICPA for a fifth year and in several State CPA Societies and custom Firm and Corporate programs to our portfolio of programs that develop the critical leadership competencies identified by the AICPA in their CPA Horizons 2025 Project.
The Bounce covers the career trajectory of professionals as they move from technical proficiency to managing people and projects and ultimately organizations. The bounce speaks to the change in direction from technical mastery to acquiring competencies to lead others and leading organizations. It is about velocity and trajectory as you shift direction to the need for more “success skills” as you move up n your career. The Bounce includes the latest research on competencies from the AICPA through the CPA Horizons 2025 Project and the CGMA Competency framework.
This presentation also includes survey results of the top issues facing young professionals and Tom's top tools for personal development.

A gig economy is a work environment ( borderless and technology enabled) where organizations /businesses hire temporary workers or freelancers instead of full-time long-term employees. In the consulting/knowledge working context, the gig economy is often referred to as the open talent economy, a term largely attributed to Deloitte Consulting.
Gig economy is at nascent stage in India and Asia.
Web and ,mobile development, web-designing, internet research and data entry are the key focus areas for Indian freelancers while some of them are also engaged in accounting, graphic design and consulting. The study, conducted with 500 Indian freelancers in their local languages, highlights that most Indian freelancers are under the age of 40 and are predominantly men.

RE:
Telecommuting: An Untapped Resource
Globalization is in full swing and luckily our company is growing, both financially and geographically. Historically, our pool of candidates has been limited to the narrow field available in the immediate vicinity of our main office. To keep up with changing times we need to explore options to that will allow us to enjoy a larger pool of qualified candidates, as well as attracting and keeping those candidates. Enhancing our technology and opening our standard policies to telecommuting could give us the edge we need to stay ahead of our competitors.
Relevant Issues
Telecommuting is not a new concept. The government explored telecommuting options to conserve gas as early as the 1970s and the private sector began taking advantage of it as soon as home computers and the internet made it possible. Today, telecommuting is common place in many industries.
The newest generation of candidates and soon to be graduates have already adapted to a constant bombardment of steaming media, multitasking and all the newest technology. The brightest minds work well independently and desire the nontraditional workplace. Telecommuting opportunities will give them more flexible schedules, the ability to work on the go and the ability to work in whatever kind of environment they find most comfortable and productive. The downside to permitting our employees to work from home, or wherever, is we will lose a certain amount of control. We will have to screen candidates very carefully and develop other ways to track their productivity to assure they aren’t taking advantage of the situation.
There are multiple ways we could achieve telecommuting capabilities and before we move forward, we’ll have to investigate which option or combination of options will give us the best results at the least cost. In the long run, converting more of our staff to telecommuters will likely save us money on top of everything else.
Changing Perspective
We know our business is already successful. With that in mind, it’s hard to picture making dramatic changes to our business model and breaking from tradition. Part of the reason we’ve been successful this long is because of our ability to find solutions in unconventional ways. We shouldn’t be shutting our door to some of the best candidates because they don’t happen to live here. Allowing employees to work from home will open the pool of candidates nationally, and potentially worldwide, without us having to pay relocation costs.
We must also look at the changing generations and encourage the best results from our new hires and current employees. We already know that people learn best under varying conditions. This is true of the best work environments as well. While working standard 8 to 5 hours in the controlled environment of a trad ...

The Future of Working for Yourself
Amazon:
•It's about fulfillment. A revolution is sweeping America. On its front lines are
people fed up with unfulfilling jobs, dysfunctional workplaces, and dead-end
careers. Meet today's new economic icon: the free agent-men and women
who are working for themselves. And meet your future.
•It's about freedom. Free agents are the marketing consultant down the
street, the home-based "mompreneur," the footloose technology contractor.
Already 30 million strong, these 21st-century pioneers are creating lives with
more meaning-and often more money. Free Agent Nation is your ticket to this
world.
•It's about time. Now, you can discover:
•The kind of free agent you can be-"soloist," "temp," or "microbusiness"-and
how to launch your new career.
•How to get the perks you once received from your boss: health insurance,
office space, training, workplace togetherness, even water cooler gossip.
•Why the free agent economy is increasingly a woman's world-and how
women are flourishing in it.
•The transformation of retirement-how older workers are creating successful

The Big Idea: The Age of Hyperspecialization
▪Top Coder: 2011 network of almost 300,000 developers from more than 200 countries. Today
1M+ members
▪The term “hyperspecialization” is not synonymous with outsourcing work to other companies or
distributing it to other places (as in offshoring), although it is facilitated by the same
technologies. Rather, it means breaking work previously done by one person into more-
specialized pieces done by several people. Whether or not those pieces are outsourced or
distributed, their separation often leads to improvements in quality, speed, and cost.
▪The biggest cost saving for most companies may come in the form of better utilization of their
own employees’ time. Because hyperspecialization entails off-loading the pieces of knowledge
workers’ jobs that can be done more efficiently by remote specialists, those knowledge workers
immediately have time freed up to spend on the higher-value tasks that only they can do.

6. HBR May/2012
The Rise of the Supertemp
▪Supertemps are top managers and professionals—from lawyers to CFOs to consultants—who’ve been trained at
top schools and companies and choose to pursue project-based careers independent of any major firm. They’re
increasingly trusted by corporations to do mission-critical work that in the past would have been done by
permanent employees or established outside firms.
▪Most supertemps are refugees from big corporations and law and consulting firms who value the autonomy and
flexibility of temporary or project-based work and find that the compensation is comparable to what they earned
in full-time jobs—sometimes even better. They leave behind the endless internal meetings and corporate politics.
▪McKinsey research in 2011 found that 58% of U.S. companies expect to use more temporary arrangements at all
levels in the years ahead
▪ In Europe, where onerous labor laws make it difficult and costly to fire anyone—thus discouraging companies
from taking on permanent hires—temporary work is even better established than it is in the United States. The
vast majority of this work is in the middle tier or below, but it is spreading in the high end.
▪According to Booz Allen Hamilton, the UK market for interim managers is one of the best developed, accounting
for as much as $1.8 billion in revenue in 2009; and across Europe, annual growth in the market for interim
executives has been over 20%.

7. McKinsey Global Institute 2018: Skill Shift
Automation and the Future of the Workforce
▪Companies will need to make significant organizational
changes at the same time as addressing these skill
shifts to stay competitive.
▪A survey of more than 3,000 business leaders in seven
countries highlights a new emphasis on continuous
learning for workers and a shift to more cross-
functional and team-based work.
▪As tasks change, jobs will need to be redefined and
companies say they will need to become more agile.
Independent work will likely grow.
▪Leadership and human resources will also need to
adapt: almost 20 percent of companies say their
executive team lacks sufficient knowledge to lead
adoption of automation and artificial intelligence.
▪Almost one in three firms are concerned that lacking
the skills they need for automation adoption will hurt
their future financial performance.

8. McKinsey Global Institute 2018: Skill Shift
Automation and the Future of the Workforce
▪MGI research finds that up to 30 percent of the working-age population in the
United States and in the EU-15 earn income through independent work
arrangements, including freelancers, contractors, temporary workers placed by
staffing agencies, and participants in the online gig or sharing economy.
▪Over 70 percent of these people participate in independent work by choice.
▪A survey by Upwork and the Freelancers Union projects that at current growth
rates, over half of the labor force will be independent workers by 2027.
