Headlands are eroded in 5 stages: cracks form in the rock (Stage 1), caves develop behind the cracks (Stage 2), the caves join to form sea arches (Stage 3), the land between the arches is eroded away leaving sea stacks (Stage 4), and eventually just small remnants are left called stumps (Stage 5).
