Fayetteville North Carolina is the county seat of Cumberland County. It was named after the Marquis de La Fayette, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The area is known for Fort Bragg, home to several US Army Airborne units, and Pope Air Force Base. The Cape Fear River Trail is a four mile paved path popular for walking, biking, and other non-motorized uses, offering views of the river and diverse plant and wildlife. The Hay Street United Methodist Church, completed in 1835, is notable as the first Methodist church in Fayetteville. Cape Fear Botanical Garden opened in 1989 and its 85 acres feature unique plants, forests, and trails showcasing local flora.
