the history of the craft.
If you haven’t heard of any famous locksmiths, it’s no surprise. A lot of locksmiths would
rather work away from the limelight. They’d rather gain a reputable business instead of
getting famous. Sure there are famous locksmiths within the community who are
acclaimed for their exceptional skills as lock pickers and dominate the craft. But as for
the famous locksmiths who take their profession to the next level, little is put in the
public eye.
Robert Barron, an Englishman of olden days, was renowned for his outstanding
locksmith skills. He significantly improved security of the lock itself with the introduction
in 1778 of the double tumbler lock. With no modern day security and no electronic
technology to help him, Robert Barron relied on his manual skills to create his piece of
art. He had impressive skills, both of his mind and hands, to create his masterpiece of
the generation.
Jeremiah Chubb was another famous locksmith. He invented a detector lock back in
1818. His detector lock had six levers and won him recognition and a monetary award
as well. He had ongoing fame as a locksmith. Surbiton is where Mr. Chubb started his
career.
Long ago, locks were first made out off wood. They have impressed, irritated, and
frustrated people over the centuries. They have made some individuals and companies
wealthy (the inventors and manufacturers) and made others well protected. Locks
constantly evolved into metal and these mechanical contraptions have come a long way
through the years.
Houdini, the legendary locksmith and escape artist, was known for his other talents. He
was a magician who gained fame because of his escape tactics. These escape tactics
depended on locks of different varieties. Houdini was a professional lock-picker who
amazed audiences with his exemplary skills.
Locksmiths back then were required to go under apprenticeships to learn new skills.
Being an apprentice has major advantages, one of which is the guidance from the
mentor. Passing on the tricks of the trade can be as fulfilling as learning t from a master
of the trade.
Arthur C. Smith was another famous locksmith. He mastered the art of ship locks in the
late 1800’s. Mr. Smith made his name in Wolverhampton, which is in the English West
Midlands.
Locksmiths from France were known for their intricate artwork on their locks. Looking
like fancy scrollwork, these locks were designed in the true French classy fashion. The
Frenchmen liked beauty in many areas of their lives and their locks were not to be left
