South Piedmont Community College was originally established in 1962 as the Ansonville Industrial Education Center. In 1967 it became Anson Technical Institute and was part of the North Carolina community college system. In 1981, it partnered with another community college to provide education in Union County. In 1999 it was officially named South Piedmont Community College.
