Monte Carlo simulation for seismic analysis of a long span suspension bridgeFranco Bontempi
This document discusses using Monte Carlo simulation to conduct seismic analysis of a long span suspension bridge that considers uncertainties. It describes generating artificial accelerograms compatible with a design response spectrum to represent seismic inputs for the probabilistic analysis. The bridge structure analyzed is based on the 1992 design for the Messina Strait Bridge in Italy, with key dimensions and material properties provided. The document outlines challenges in deterministic seismic analysis for such complex structures and the need for probabilistic methods to account for uncertainties.
Monte Carlo simulation for seismic analysis of a long span suspension bridgeStroNGER2012
This document discusses using Monte Carlo simulation to conduct seismic analysis of a long span suspension bridge that considers uncertainties. It describes generating artificial accelerograms compatible with a design response spectrum to define seismic scenarios for the probabilistic analysis. The bridge structure analyzed has a main span of 3300 meters and is based on a proposed design for the Messina Strait Bridge in Italy. The analysis is performed using a 3D finite element model developed in ADINA software along with a custom FORTRAN program for the Monte Carlo simulations. Results are presented as average displacements and stresses along with their variances to account for uncertainties.

building projects as well as in the renewal of the existing plants.
This role consists in the technical responsibility of penstock, power
unit, gates, valves, trashracks and rakes design for hydro power
plants placed both in Italy and abroad, as well as in the technical
coordination of the design activities related to the other disciplines
(civil – electrical and automation engineering).
In this role I worked in Spain, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru,
Greece, Turkey and Italy.
As Project Engineer (PE) I also deal with the issue of feasibility
studies and due diligence, in order to evaluate the advantages of
buying projects to be achieved or existing hydro power plants.
I have just prepared the basic engineering for a green field 15 MW
hydro power plant to be built in North Peru.
As PE I have just completed the refurbishment of Cassibile hydro
power plant (1,7 MW) placed in Siracusa area (Italy) and of
Spresiano hydro power plant (0,7 MW) in Treviso area (Italy).
As PE I completed the refurbishment of Arson hydro power plant
(6,9 MW) placed in Belluno area (Italy). This work dealt with the
installation of 3 new power units, as well as of all the electrical and
automation equipments both of the powerhouse and of the high
voltage substation.
From June 2014 until November 2014 I dealt with the final design
of the gates, stoplogs, trashracks and penstocks of 3 new hydro
power plants in construction in Mato Grosso area (Brasil) with a
total capacity of 102 MW. For these plants I was also involved in th
technical specifications issue and in the analysis of the tenders.
From May 2014 to June 2014 I was involved in the final the design
of the penstock of Lama dei Peligni hydro power plant (Chieti area,
Italy). For this project I also prepared the technical specification
and made the tenders analysis.
I am currently involved in the final design of the gates and the
trashracks placed in the forebay of Citta di Macerata hydro power
plant (Macerata area, Italy).
I also worked (end of 2013) as technical specialist for the final
design of the penstock of Chucas hydro power plant (50 MW, in
2. Since January 2009
to September 2010
Since January 2008
to January 2009
Since June 2007 to

Costa Rica).
In May 2013 I dealt with a due diligence to estimate the profit of
buying three existing hydro power plants placed in the North of
Turkey (a total of 22 MW) and coordinated the execution of the
Francis power units performance test.
In 2012 I prepared the technical specifications and made the
technical analysis of the tenders for 3 hydro power plants in Mato
Grosso area currently in construction (see previous description).
In 2011 I dealt with the design of the penstock of Palo Viejo power
plant (87 MW, in Guatemala) and the due diligence which took
Enel Green Power to buy Argyri existing hydro power plant (6,6
MW, in Greece).
In parallel to the listed activities I worked on same due diligences
relevant to hydro projects in East Europe and America.
Enel Green Power S.p.A.(Pisa)
Mechanical engineer role inside Geothermal Production Area –
