RESEARCH WORK / MAIN ISSUES
The main research subject has been the analysis and evaluation of the
material (cells and supernatant fluid) collected through Bronchoalveolar
Lavage / BAL, from patients with various lung disorders.
A considerable work has been done using the BAL cells and fluid from
patients with non occupational exposure to asbestos This work is
considered as a crucial component to the identification of Metsovo Lung,
a lung disorder characterized by pleural calcifications, T4 lymphocytic
alveolitis and high incidence of malignant Mesothelioma.
Farther analysis of that material revealed the electrophoretic patern of
the BAL fluid, a pilot study which led to the more meticulous and
sophisticated proteome analysis of the Metsovo Lung BAL fluid with very
interesting findings.
BAL material has been also used for the evaluation and differential
diagnosis of Sarcoidosis and other interstitial lung diseases.
In the case of Sarcoidosis blood serum from these patient has also been
used in cell cultures, in order to evaluate its effect on the proliferation
rate of A549 and SKMES cell lines, the potential changes in the cytokine
profile and especially the EGFR expression (as EGFR is powerful receptor
in the case of epithelium proliferation and differentiation) and the
potential effect of an EGFR inhibitor in the process.
The BAL material has been also widely used in the evaluation of lung
involvement in autoimmune rheumatic diseases mainly Primary Sjogren
syndrome and the study of its pathogenetic mechanism.

6. Apart from the use of the BAL material as a research tool, its analysis is
always a valuable and in some rare diseases a sole contributor in the
diagnostic procedure, as has been proved during the 30 years of
successful collaboration with the Pulmonary Department of the Ioannina
University Hospital.

The Anatomy-Histology-Embryology Department is obliged to provide the
appropriate education of the 1st and 2nd year of UOI Medical students,
on the above three teaching units.
Histology and Embryology are both included in the same teaching unit
until 2015.
From this year forth, Embryology as a whole constitutes an independent
subject and teaching unit.

7. The number of students since 1988, when there were around 120,
increases steadily and around 1999 we were receiving 150 students per
annum, meaning that the Department had to accommodate and properly
educate around 300 students every year.
Since 2012 we are facing a shocking increase in the number of students
per annum, which has already reached the number of 190. [the laboratory
teaching facilities do not follow with due reflexes]

-for each of the 2 years the students are taking them :
Lectures : 4 hours/week , increased in 6 hours/week since 2002

The teaching obligations included the teaching of all the aspects of all
three subjects, [lectures and lab couching]
The amount of chapters to be covered was always corresponding to the
number of the members of the Department.
*And here was the catch.

9. In collaboration with Dr S.Kalamidas, Assistant Professor of Anatomy-
Histology-Embryology, we introduced the systematic use of PCs and
digital microscopic samples in the teaching process of Histology II [organ
histology].
As the only members of the Histology II and Embryology II team, we are
fully responsible for the preparation of the teaching material [in oral and
digital form] and its distribution and also for the lectures, the lab
training of the students [constant presence in the lab during every course
-8 hours/week- for further teaching and coaching] and any technical
support concerning the handling of the digital material.
There has been no help from any other person or member of the
Department during this very demanding process of countless hours of
preparation of the digital material.
**with the exception of the invaluable help of Mrs Doussaba, secretary
responsible for the 2nd year students, in the organization of the courses
and their smooth function **
Structure and scope of Histology II :
The teaching procedure consists of lectures and laboratory courses.
1. Lectures / week : Histology II 4 hours / Embryology II 2 hours
2. Laboratory courses 8 hours / week : 2 hours for every student, [8
hours for the teachers]
The students are working in groups of 6-8 individuals.
The course includes both the study of histological specimens on glass
slides under the microscope and of digital material [virtual slides] with
the use of PC, through internet connection with selected sites from top
rate universities, giving free access in their histology material.
The students are obliged to construct an essay, using snap shots of
characteristic areas of the organ under study from the virtual slides, and
label the components of the sample. The essay then is sent to us to be
evaluated and to be returned with comments to the student.

10. Each study group is also involved in the preparation of an essay
concerning the detailed analysis of the structure of an organ, using digital
material and reference sources. The essay is to be presented and be sent
to the teachers, in digital form, at the end of the semester.
The communication with the students, for instructions, comments, or any
other help needed, is constant, either physical, during and lectures, lab
courses and appointed hours in the lab’ area, or virtual through internet
[any time and day]
Their progress control is succeeded through digital examinations at the
end of each teaching unit and a final lab exam at the end of the semester
consistent of testing their ability on recognising the given samples [as a
whole and on details] on both glass slides under the microscope and digital
material. Successful handling of the given material is obligatory for the
participation in the final written exams on the whole subject of Histology
II.

** In the context of providing a better education, a group of volunteers
among students, with a special interest for Histology, has been organized
the ATLAS team. The objective of the team is the creation of an
Histology Atlas using material provided by the Michigan University virtual
slides site, [having first, naturally, secured the permission of the site’s
director]. Every completed chapter, is presented by members of the
ATLAS team, to the students during the respective lab course. Upon
completion the Histology Atlas will be incorporated in the teaching
material of Histology II and uploaded in the Histology II locus of the uoi,
e-course site.

11. The same process, except presently the lab training, is followed for the
teaching/testing of Embryology II.
In Embryology, the students are committed on preparing essays mainly
concerning on a particular organ development, genes, genetic paths and
mediators involved, possible errors during that process and possible
subsequent consequences.
The essays are orally presented in an open hearing and send in digital
form, to be uploaded in the Embryology II locus of the uoi, e-course site.
The teaching material of Histology II and Embryology II, is available
through the uoi, e-course site in the loci of Histology II and Embryology
II respectively, as well as any information concerning subjects of
interest as exams results, self estimation tests, new books, interesting
papers.

-the structure, and properties resulted from that precise structure, of
all the tissues of the human body and the way this structure leads to the
special function of each tissue [but also the way a recommended function
could interfere with the structure of a tissue].

12. The teaching material is available through the BAT site

*The lab courses consist of the study of histological samples on glass
slides under the microscope and the identification of the main structural
features of each tissue. The students had also the opportunity to
perform a simple histological staining [H&E] of cells and blood smears
[their own !] on glass slides and study them under the microscope.
For the final exams the students had the choice either to present an
essay on a subject of general interest for their studies, or to construct a
complete three dimensional model of a tissue. [photographed material
available on the site of BAT/UOI]. The models turned to be exceptionally
successful.
According to the students involved, [25, 4th year students / course] and
my personal impression, the course has been successful in the context of
acquired knowledge, team work and fan.
The course, unfortunately, terminated due to objections raised from the
Director of my Department, Dr Kanavaros, concerning the use of the lab’s
teaching equipment from students others than those of the medical
school, for fear of possible damages.
According to my own judgement , that without the lab practice
component, the course would be of no substantial value, it had been
cancelled.

students being the foundation concept
Participation in the 1st pilot project of the introduction of digital
material in the teaching process through which the lab has been supplied
with the first PVs and software related to all three areas of teaching
[1999]
Acquisition of system of PC / Microscope / digital camera for the
demonstration, on video wall, of the histology specimens the students
were obliged to study under the microscope.
The basic teaching model, set at that time, is still in operation
[improved and extended ]
Since 2007 with the collaboration of the assistant professor Dr
S.Kalamidas, we introduced the use of digital material in the laboratory
exercises, in order to improve our teaching methods and catch up with
the international model of teaching histology [detailed analysis has
already being given].
