The 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China caused severe devastation, destroying medical and government infrastructure. Over 87,000 people died and 350,000 were injured, with over 10,000 injuries being severe. As a result of extraction and transportation issues, many survivors suffered from unhealed wounds and permanent disabilities. An international exchange program is proposed to further develop rehabilitation in China through collaboration. The program would involve Chinese rehabilitation professionals visiting European and American rehabilitation departments, and American and European doctors visiting Chinese rehabilitation departments to learn from each other and foster collaboration and lifelong friendships.
