When designing their magazine, the author conducted extensive research on existing magazines in the rock genre, particularly Kerrang magazine, to understand conventions and what would appeal to their target audience. They took influence from Kerrang's design elements like its ripped and damaged aesthetic and layout. The author aimed the magazine at teens aged 13-19 who enjoy rock music. They focused on bands and styles they thought this social group would like based on research. By having others identify the target group from the cover design, the author confirmed they had accurately represented this audience. The author believes Bauer Media would be a good company to publish the magazine as they already have experience with the rock genre through Kerrang and other platforms.

How Media Products Represent Social Groups
1. 1) Question one) in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products.
A) Before i started my design of my magazine i did extensive research into magazines of the
same genre and of publication companies of today. I did this to make sure i had a full
understanding of media conventions and of what an audience would want for my genre of
music. One of the two biggest magazines that help me in the design of my product is kerrang
magazine. In my research i used mostly only kerrang magazine to analysis this is not only
because i believe the design is one i should take heavy influence from. But it is one of the
biggest magazine of the rock genre, but if i want my magazine to be successful taking influence
from them would help me succeed. The audience of my magazine and the audience of kerrang
are of the same age and gender. As i have looked at a lot of magazines from kerrang it has
helped me understand what sells to my target audience. It has also helped me understand what
language and style i should use. The design of the kerrang is very different to other magazines
of the same genre, it has a ripped and damaged style which is very appealing to my audience.
Because of this i want to use elements of the ripped and damaged effects in my work to
hopefully make my magazine as appealing to my target audience and also make my magazine
as successful. As i was looking through the kerrang magazine i was looking at the content page
of them and the layout not only does it displays the information in a way in which the audience
can easily read but attracts them in with a genre correct colour palette. Because of this in my
contents page i have used a similar layout of the page information and the sub headings, i have
done this to make sure my audience can find pages and information as easily as possible.
2)Question two) how does your media product represent particular social group
A)When i was making my magazine i decided i would target it towards teens between the ages
of 13 to 19 who love the rock genre. These people are normally classified as goth or emo and in
some cases scene (a sub genre of the group), They are also stereotyped as wearing black and
are quite loners. my magazine will represent this social group. But although this group is my
main audience i have tried to make my magazine open to others such as people who have
interested in the rock genre but do not fit into these groups. Because of this i have made sure
Broken glass has only looked at bands which people from these groups would like. To find
music this group would like i did research into the new bands on the scene and the most
popular on the scene and then to check my research i compared the bands to the ones i
personally listen to and bands people i know from this group of people like. This gave me a
great understanding of what would work and would interested people and which would not.
When i had made sure my publication had the correct look and followed the correct bands for
the genre i looked over the full design and made sure is represent the social group i was aiming
for. To do this i had taken a copy of my front cover of the first issue and ask people i knew ββwhat
group of people do you think this magazine is made for?ββ. From everyone i asked (10 people)
all said the correct group or the sub genre i have mentioned earlier. This not only showed me
that i had correctly made the publication for the group of people i was aiming for but that i knew
it would attract that group to buy my product.
2. 3)Question three) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A)I would like my magazine to be published by Bauer Media Group, this is because not only do
they already own one of the larges rock magazines to dates (kerrang magazine) but i believe
that my magazine may flourish by a company that knows how to sell a magazine of this genre. I
also feel they would know what's best when it comes to how to make my magazine more
appealing to my reader as they already sell one of the largest rock magazines to date and how
to handle the business elements of owning a successful rock magazine. Bauer is also a media
company on many different media platforms such as online, tv, radio and of course magazine. I
believe this would give my magazine the best chance of success being with a company which
could correctly advertise my product but also could help move my publication on to an online
platform. The reason i would like to move my publication onto a online platform is sale of
magazine have dropped over the last couple of years as everything has moved onto a online
platform. To make sure my publication stays with the times i would like to make sure it would be
ready if i was willing to move it to an online media platform. Another reason i would want my
publication to be printed by bauer is they already make billions per year for there other
magazines and media platforms. So combining this with their understanding of the market,
cross platform integration and advertising. I believe they would be the best option to make my
magazine a success and give me a better understanding of media in today's world.
4)Question four)Who would be the audience for your media product?
A)my product will be aimed at an audience from the age of 13 to 19 who enjoy rock and sub
genre of rock. My publication would have no target gender as i believe aiming my product at
one gender not only affects sales but means i would have to edit the design and colours i would
have to use. This would not only make my task harder but it would make making a publication
for this genre extremely hard. If i was to aim my magazine at a male audience only i would have
to change my colours palette from red black and white to more male stereotype colours such as
blues and greens. This would not only lock of parts of my market but would make it hard to sell
to a new audience meaning i couldn't increase my revenue and also i couldn't make them
colours work with this genre of music. My publication will also be open to everyone of all races
and sexualitys i have done this to make sure my publication reaches the most people it can to
make sure i have to highest revenue stream i can. Because i am doing a publication on rock
and the subgenres of rock it means i have a smaller social group of people i can sell my product
to is a negative, but also has allowed me to make my publication more open. This is because i
will need to hit as many people as i can and make sure they come back for the next issue. This
is not an issue someone who is doing a publication for a more mainstream genre of music such
as pop and rap.
5)Question five) How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract my audience i use many different skill and techniques i have learned or researched. I
used these skills and techniques throughout my publication to make sure i have attracted my
audience as much as i possibly could. On my front page i used genre correct images and
colours to make sure people could identify what genre of music magazine it was. Also to make
sure i attracted my audience and made my publication genre correct i research fonts for my
magazine. In my research i looked at publications from the same genre and even fonts from
bands album covers to see what looked genre correct and which did not. Once i had an okay
understanding of what the font need to look like i went on to dafont.com. This website has a
3. huge range of fonts for all genres. I made sure when i was looking for the correct font that i was
taking my time and asking other while looking at my research to make sure i was picking a font
correctly. I put a lot of effort into the correct font because as it will be on my front cover and
throughout my magazine and it need to attract my audience as much as it could. When i had
finished my final design i checked it against other publications of the same genre it was genre
correct but also its own style as was not a clone of another publication. Not only did i make sure
my font was genre correct but i made sure my models were wearing clothing one would find in
this genre. This is normal dark clothes and band merch. I did this to makes sure my audience
knew my publication was for them and this would attract them to buy. I have address my
audience by adding contests in my publication and social media elements such as facebook fan
pages and twitter handles. This allows them to find information about my publication online and
be able to find out when the nexts issue is out and what it could contain. To increase how i
attract my audience i would move my publication online so i could also sell copies to my
audience online through marketplaces and other platforms. This would make it easier to get and
also may make the buyer want it more since it is easier to collect, they don't have to leave their
homes and also have it with them everywhere they go on there phones or tables.
6)Question six)What have you learnt about technologies from the process
When i started my course i had a basic understanding of photoshop and other image editing
software and mac computers. While i have made this publication i have increased my
knowledge and understand of these softwares and mac computers by 10 fold. I have also
learned how to correctly capture and image for a front cover, double page and contents page.
With this knowledge i have also learned the different micro terms of media such as long shot,
medium shot, close up, canted angle and many many more. Researching, designing and
making this publication not only has helped me understand media in today's world it has also
helped me understand how to correctly target my product and shape it for that audience. I have
also learned how to deeply analyze others works to make my own as successful and what
makes a magazine sell. One of the main things i have learned from making my publication is
how to sell to my audience, this has greatly helped me make my magazine stand out and be
more attractive to my audience. I have also learned how to use and create blogs on the site
blogger and how to use a whole range of other website such as wix and survey monkey. Before
i started my publication i had no understanding of these website or how to use them. Now i can
correctly design a blog and create a survey for an audience, which both have came in great use
display my work and collect research for my publication.
7)Question seven)Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt
in the progression to the full product?
