Estimating Product
To estimate the product, round the
factors to their highest place values,
then get the product of the rounded
numbers. Study the examples below.
EXAMPLE 1:
In a book sale, there are 887 titles of
books being sold in each day. About how
many books are sold in 4 days
887
x 4
900
X 4
3600
Round off the number with
the highest place value.
Multiply the rounded
numbers.
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the estimated product of 345
and 67.
345
X 67
300
X 70
21000
The estimated product of 345 and 67 is 21,000
Mental Multiplication
In multiplying 2-digit number by 1-
digit number without regrouping , use
the distributive property of
multiplication or simply multiply the
first factor by the second factor from
left to right.
1 Example 1:
Find the product of 24 and 2
24x2 = (20x2) + (4x2)
= 40 + 8
= 48
The product of 24 and 2 is 48
2 Find the product of 43
and 2.
Step 1: Multiply 4 and 2
4 x 2 = 8
Step 2: Multipy 3 and 2
3 x 2 = 6
Step 3: Put the product together
