Ernie Davis was a running back for Syracuse University born in 1939 in New Salem, PA who lived with his grandparents after his father died. He had an impressive college football career winning 3 trophies as the number 44 for Syracuse, but tragically died at age 23 in 1963 in Cleveland in a hospital before playing in the NFL.
