Leyla will give a bold call to let go of tightly held green myths and think bigger to create more sustainable systems and products. Bungee jumping
1. Deterministic sampling (DS) is an uncertainty quantification (UQ) method that is more practical than random sampling for a bungee jumping company evaluating the tensile strength of ropes. DS fully utilizes prior information about the ropes, avoids adding unnecessary sampling variability, and explicitly represents ambiguity from incomplete information.
2. DS represents the claimed statistical properties of ropes (e.g. tensile strength distributions) with small sets of deterministic samples, rather than introducing sampling error through random sampling. This allows for more efficient and reproducible UQ without guessing distributions or assumptions of independence.
3. For a simple rope model, DS provides the correct UQ result with just two samples, while random sampling with even 100 samples
Facts About IT Recycling
E-waste, which includes cell phones and IT equipment, is growing rapidly worldwide with only 12.5% currently being recycled. It contains harmful substances like lead that can damage human health as well as precious metals. Recycling 1 million cell phones can recover over 35,000 lbs of copper, 770 lbs of silver, and 57 lbs of gold, but most e-waste ends up in landfills and incinerators where toxins are released.
