GBP/USD touched session lows of 1.5088 immediately following the release of the data,
before pulling back to 1.5118.The pound dipped to session lows on Tuesday after data
showed that growth in the U.K. construction sector lost momentum in April as uncer-
tainty ahead of the upcoming general elections on Thursday weighed. A research firm
said the construction purchasing managers’ index fell to 54.2 from 57.8 in March. Econo-
mists had expected a more modest slowdown to 57.5. It was the slowest rate of expan-
sion in 22 months. A reading below 50.0 indicates activity is declining, while a reading
above that level implies it is increasing.
EUR/USD slid 0.36% to 1.1107, extending its pullback from the two-month high of
1.1289 set last Thursday. The dollar pushed higher against the euro on Tuesday as trade
volumes remained thin with markets in Japan closed for the Golden Week holidays. The
dollar remained supported after data on Monday showed that U.S. factory orders rose
at the fastest pace in eight months in March, adding to indications that the economic re-
covery is regaining momentum. New orders for U.S. factory goods rose by a larger than
forecast 2.1% in March after a revised 0.1% decline in February. The data came after
economic reports late last week indicated that the U.S. recovery had turned a corner fol-
lowing a recent bout of weakness.
