Elvis Presley was the first major rock and roll star. He was born in 1935 in Mississippi and moved to Memphis as a teenager. In the 1950s, he had several number one hits that helped launch rock music into the mainstream. Presley recorded hundreds of songs and sold over 1 billion records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He died in 1977 at his Graceland estate in Memphis.

The first huge rock n' roll star, Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, during The Great
Depression, and moved to Memphis in his teens, signing with Sun Records in 1954. He cut five singles
for the label, becoming a hot commodity in the process on the country charts. After Presley and
manager Colonel Tom Parker joined forces, label head Sam Phillips sold Presley's contract to RCA in
1955 for $35,000.
