Elvis Presley was the first major rock and roll star. He was born in 1935 in Mississippi and moved to Memphis as a teenager. In the 1950s, he had several number one hits that helped launch rock music into the mainstream. Presley recorded hundreds of songs and sold over 1 billion records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He died in 1977 at his Graceland estate in Memphis.
